Chapter 5 - The Glass Cage

“Mother’s heartbeat was the key all along.”Sophia’s heart slammed against her ribs. "What did you say?!"

Arthur struggled to keep the jammed elevator doors open. "Eleanor... your mother... her brainwaves were integrated into the mainframe eighteen years ago! Julian used advanced neuro-technology to keep her in a cryogenic state! The $50 billion isn't just money—it's the power grid sustaining her life!"

Tears spilled from Sophia's eyes, washing away the dirt and humiliation of the night. Her mother hadn't died in that filthy hospital room—that was a body double, a decoy to hide the truth.

"Hold the doors!" Sophia screamed, charging toward the elevator.

Victoria, seeing her last chance to escape the wrath of the security forces, tried to trip Sophia as she ran past. "If I lose everything, you don't get your mother back!" Victoria shrieked.

Sophia didn't hesitate. She grabbed the heavy crystal champagne bucket from a nearby table and smashed it down, sending Victoria sprawling across the floor, unconscious.

Sophia and Arthur squeezed through the jammed elevator doors and slammed the manual override switch. The elevator plunged deep into the earth, dropping thirty floors beneath the Vance estate.

When the doors opened, they stepped into a vast, white, clinical chamber illuminated by hundreds of glowing monitors. In the center of the room stood a massive, spherical glass tank filled with blue luminescent liquid.

Inside the tank, suspended in suspended animation, was a woman. Her face was pale, serene, and identical to the old photograph Sophia kept hidden in her locket.

Standing at the control console across the room was Julian, violently typing commands into a terminal.

"Stop!" Sophia shouted.

Julian whipped around, a crazed look in his eyes. "You're too late! I'm initiating the system purge! If I can't have the Vance legacy, nobody will!"

"If you touch that console again, I'll shoot," Arthur warned, raising a security pistol he had snatched from the upper floor.

Julian laughed maniacally. "Go ahead, Arthur! Shoot me! But the system is tied to my heart rate! If my heart stops, the cryogenic chamber flushes its toxic contents, and Eleanor dies in seconds!"

Arthur’s hand trembled. The gun wobbled in his grip.

Sophia stepped forward, her eyes locked on the glowing glass tank where her mother lay trapped. "Julian... you claim to be a genius, but you missed one detail."

Julian frowned. "What are you talking about?"

May you like

"You built this system based on fear and control," Sophia said, walking steadily toward the console. "You thought my mother's life was your leverage. But you forgot why she built the override into my scar."

CLIFFHANGER HOOK: Sophia didn't reach for the control panel. Instead, she grabbed Arthur’s gun, turned it around, and pressed the barrel directly against her own heart. "My heart rate controls the primary network now, Julian. If I pull this trigger, the entire global network collapses... including your offshore trillions."
