Chapter 1 - The Sovereign of the MetropolisThe sharp fracture of crystal echoed off the mahogany wainscoting of the foyer, dying instantly in the oppressive silence that followed. Claudia remained sprawled across the imported Italian marble, a thin crimson line of blood trickling from the corner of her lip where Richard’s heavy signet ring had caught her skin. Her fingers, still curled into the stem of the shattered wineglass, trembled not from pain, but from sheer, incomprehensible disbelief.

Mark leaped from his velvet armchair, his face contorted in a mixture of outrage and deep-seated panic.

"Are you insane?!" Mark roared, taking a step toward his father-in-law before freezing under the absolute frost of Richard's gaze. "You hit my wife! In our home! Have you lost your mind entirely over a spoiled brat?"

Richard did not even look at his son. His focus remained entirely on the small, shivering form pressed tightly against his chest. Ethan’s breathing was shallow, his little body radiating the dull, dangerous heat of an oncoming fever. The child’s fingers were hooked desperately into the wool of Richard’s custom-tailored overcoat, as if letting go meant plunging back into the icy abyss of the courtyard.

"Mark," Richard’s voice was barely a whisper, yet it carried the crushing weight of an avalanche. "For thirty-five years, I watched you crawl your way up the corporate ladder. I gave you my daughter’s hand, I gave you a vice-presidency in Whitaker Global, and I gave you every margin of grace a father could afford a mediocre son. And this... this is how you repay my blood?"

Claudia pushed herself up from the floor, wiping the blood from her mouth with the back of a manicured hand, her eyes blazing with hysterical fury.

"Get out!" she shrieked, pointing a shaking finger toward the massive double doors. "Security! Get this lunatic and his bastard grandson out of my sight! Mark, call the police! Have him arrested for assault!"

Silence stretched. No security guards appeared. No heavy footsteps echoed from the corridors.

Richard let out a cold, humorless chuckle. It was a sound that made the hair on the back of Mark’s neck stand up instantly.

"Security?" Richard tilted his head, his eyes locking onto Claudia’s panic-stricken face. "Claudia, my dear... did you genuinely believe that the man who installed your security system didn't also write the firmware? Did you think the guards standing at your gates answer to your mortgage payments, or to the Whitaker Trust that backs every single brick of this estate?"

Mark’s face drained of all color. He staggered backward, his knees hitting the edge of the coffee table. "What... what are you talking about? This house is ours. We bought it. The deed—"

"The deed bears your name, yes," Richard interrupted smoothly, turning slowly to face his son. "A clever little fiction I allowed you to maintain so you could feel like a man in your own domain. But check Section 8, Paragraph 12 of the master trust deed, Mark. The property tax, the zoning permits, the underlying collateral—it has all been held in escrow by Whitaker Holdings since the day you signed the purchase agreement."

Richard shifted Ethan slightly, adjusting his overcoat to better shield the boy from the draft.

"As of thirty seconds ago," Richard continued, his voice dropping to a lethal register, "the escrow has been dissolved. You are trespassing."
