Chapter 2 - The Audit of the DamnedBefore Mark could formulate a denial, the heavy oak front doors swung wide open without a knock.

A phalanx of four men in charcoal-grey suits marched into the foyer. Leading them was Arthur Vance, Richard’s personal legal counsel and the most feared corporate liquidator on the Eastern Seaboard. Vance didn't even glance at Claudia, who was still picking shards of glass out of her designer skirt. Instead, he snapped open a sleek leather briefcase and extracted a thick sheaf of documents.
"Mr. Whitaker," Vance nodded briskly, handing a silver-nibbed pen to his employer. "The asset freeze is complete. All personal accounts, corporate credit lines, and subsidiary holdings tied to Mark and Claudia Sterling have been locked pending an immediate forensic audit."
Mark stumbled forward, his hands clawing at the air. "You can't do that! That's my capital! That's Whitaker Global stock options! I'm an executive!"
"Not anymore, Mark," Richard said, taking the pen from Vance. With swift, merciless strokes, he signed the top document on Vance's portfolio. "Effective immediately, your employment with Whitaker Global is terminated for gross negligence, breach of fiduciary duty, and conduct unbecoming of an officer of the corporation."
"No! No, you're bluffing!" Claudia screamed, lunging toward Richard like a cornered animal. "You can't ruin us! We have society events! We have investments! We are part of this family!"
"Family?" Richard looked down at her with a gaze so devoid of human warmth it felt sub-zero. "When you locked a three-year-old child—my blood—outside in the freezing rain for nine hours because he spilled juice on your imported Persian rug, you ceased to be family. You became a parasite."
Richard turned his back on them, walking toward the grand staircase with Ethan resting securely against his shoulder. "Vance. Have the local child protective services dispatched here immediately. Provide them with the security footage from the courtyard cameras. I want both of them investigated for child endangerment and severe abuse."
"Right away, sir," Vance replied, stepping aside to let his boss pass.

As Richard reached the first landing, Mark dropped to his knees on the marble floor, his hands gripping his head in utter devastation. His career, his wealth, his status—vaporized in less than five minutes, all because of a sadistic whim he had permitted his wife to enact against his own flesh and blood.
And upstairs, waiting in the master bedroom, lay the silent witness to the entire tragedy: Ethan’s mother, Sarah, fast asleep under the heavy sedation Claudia had forced upon her every evening to keep her compliant.
