Chapter 4 - THE SECRET IN THE DOSSIER"That's enough!"

A booming voice cut through the shouting relatives. General Harrison Vance—no relation to Victoria, but Daniel's direct commanding officer and a legendary figure within the Pentagon—pushed his way through the stunned crowd. His silver hair and chest full of ribbons commanded instant obedience. He looked from Daniel to Margaret, then down at my four children, who stood calmly beside me, entirely unfazed by the screaming adults.

"Colonel Reynolds," General Harrison barked, his face dark as a thundercloud. "Explain yourself. What is this woman talking about? What evidence folder is the boy referring to?"

Daniel opened his mouth, but no sound came out. His lips trembled. He looked like a man standing on the edge of an active volcano waiting for the ground to give way.

"General," I said, stepping forward and offering a crisp, formal military salute, which he instinctively returned out of sheer habit. "With your permission, I can brief you on the contents of the dossier. As commander of the Texas Interstate Special Investigations Division, my unit was tracking a major money-laundering network funneling illicit funds through defense contractors. Our investigation led us straight to a numbered Swiss account controlled by Margaret Reynolds."

Margaret let out a strangled cry. "It's a conspiracy! She fabricated everything! She's a bitter ex-wife seeking revenge!"

"Shut up, mother!" Daniel finally screamed, the pressure cracking his psyche wide open. He spun around to face her, his eyes bloodshot and frantic. "Just shut your damn mouth! You told me she lost them! You swore to me the babies died in that clinic! You said it was better for my career!"

The confession hung in the air like poison gas.

Every relative in the room gasped. Victoria stared at Daniel in absolute revulsion, ripped her engagement ring off her finger, and threw it directly into the burning fireplace before storming toward the front doors.

"You knew?" I asked softly, stepping closer to him, my voice cutting through his breakdown like a razor. "You didn't know they survived, Daniel? Or did you just look the other way because it was convenient for your ambitions?"

"I didn't know!" Daniel sobbed, his military bearing completely gone, reducing him to a pathetic, shivering wreck on the floor of his grand estate. "Mom told me... she said you took the money and left. She handled everything..."

"And the picture Noah asked about?" I continued, my gaze narrowing as I tapped the manila folder against my palm. "The photograph of Margaret sitting in that Swiss bank manager's office shaking hands with an arms dealer currently wanted by Interpol? That was sitting right on your private desk drawer, Colonel. Right underneath your unblemished service medals."

Noah tugged gently on my uniform sleeve. "Mama, can we go now? It smells like fake snow and bad people in here."

I smiled down at my son, placing a reassuring hand on his small shoulder. "In just a minute, sweetheart. Mama just has to finish closing a case."
