Chapter 6 - THE AFTERMATH IN AUSTINThree days later, back in my office in Austin, the reality of what had happened at Fort Carson was making national headlines.

Major news networks ran twenty-four-hour coverage of the stunning federal raid on the Reynolds estate. “FALL OF A DYNASTY: HIGH-RANKING MILITARY OFFICER ARRESTED IN MASSIVE EMBEZZLEMENT AND FAMILY FRAUD SCANDAL,” screamed the banners across cable news channels.

Inside my office, the atmosphere was much quieter. A warm mug of hot chocolate sat on my desk, surrounded by four smiling drawings from Noah, Ethan, Sophia, and Olivia depicting our helicopter flight over the mountains.

My secure terminal chimed. It was an encrypted priority message from General Harrison Vance himself.

“Commander Vance,” the dispatch read. “An internal tribunal has been expedited. Daniel Reynolds has been stripped of his rank, dishonorably discharged, and transferred to federal detention pending trial. Margaret Reynolds is facing multiple felony counts with no option for bail. Your division has performed with exemplary precision. The Department of Defense thanks you for purging this rot from our ranks.”

I closed the file with a quiet click. There was no sense of triumph or petty revenge—only a profound, steady peace.

For eight years, I had carried the invisible weight of a betrayal that nearly broke me. I had worked eighty-hour work weeks, studied late into the night while my babies slept, and fought tooth and nail through a male-dominated law enforcement system just to prove to myself—and to them—that we didn't need a man to survive.

We didn't just survive. We conquered.

The office door creaked open, and four small heads poked in, followed by four sets of eager footsteps.

"Mama," Sophia asked, clutching her favorite stuffed rabbit. "Are the bad men in jail now?"

I smiled, standing up from my desk and walking around to scoop Sophia into my arms while Ethan, Noah, and Olivia crowded around my legs.

"Yes, sweetie," I whispered, pressing a kiss to her soft curls. "The bad men and women who tried to hurt our family are exactly where they belong."

"Can we go to the park now?" Noah asked hopefully.

"Absolutely," I said, grabbing my tactical jacket off the rack. "Let's go."
