Chapter 9 - WHISPERS OF THE PASTLife settled into a steady, beautiful rhythm after the storm.

Promotions followed. My division was expanded to cover multi-state federal intelligence operations, making me one of the youngest and most decorated female commanders in the history of the Texas Department of Public Safety. The media occasionally ran retrospectives on the Reynolds Fall from Grace scandal, but to us, it was ancient history—a dark chapter in a book we had already finished reading.

One Saturday morning in late May, while helping Noah and Ethan build a massive wooden spaceship in the backyard, my phone chimed on the patio table.

It wasn't a secure military relay this time. It was a standard civilian notification from the federal prison administration.

“Inmate Reynolds, Daniel - Medical Transfer Notice.”

I paused, holding a wrench in my hand, staring at the screen for a moment. My heart didn't race. There was no surge of adrenaline or fear—only a quiet, detached curiosity.

The notification stated that Daniel had been transferred to a low-security prison medical wing following a minor health scare. There was no request for contact, no appeal, no legal motion attached. Just a standard bureaucratic notification sent to his legal next-of-kin—which, technically, was still legally registered under Kesha Reynolds.

I tapped the screen, deleting the notification without opening the full document.

"Mama! Look! The boosters are ready!" Noah yelled, holding up a painted cardboard cylinder covered in glitter.

I smiled, tossing the phone onto the patio chair, completely out of mind and out of my life.

"Coming, Captain!" I called out, wiping the dust from my hands and running across the grass to join my children in the sun.
