Chapter 7 - The UltimatumThe smell of autumn rain mixed with the scent of burning sugar as Claire stared at the photograph on the wooden bench.

The image captured a moment of pure, unguarded tenderness—the exact second Nathan had looked at her like she was the only person in a world that had forgotten how to care. And now, Victoria Vance was holding that exact moment like a loaded gun pointed directly at Nathan’s head.

“You’re bluffing,” Claire said, forcing her voice to remain steady, though her hands were trembling violently at her sides. “Nathan has better lawyers than you. He already defeated Julian.”

“Julian is a pawn who lost his queen,” Victoria replied smoothly, snapping her leather portfolio shut with a sharp thud. “I am the entire board of directors. Nathan’s wealth isn’t just cash in a mattress; it’s tied up in complex cross-collateralized trust funds and federal development bonds. One whisper of conflict of interest from a romantic entanglement during an active regulatory review, and the federal government freezes his entire portfolio.”

Victoria stepped closer, her designer perfume sharp and suffocating in the crisp afternoon air.

“You think you’re saving him by letting him play the hero, don’t you?” Victoria sneered. “You think your little bakery and your rustic charm are what he’s been looking for? Wake up, girl. He’s using you as a distraction from his own grief. The moment things get real, the moment his empire actually collapses because of you, he will resent you for the rest of his life.”

The words cut deeper than any knife. They struck right at the terrifying, insecure core of Claire’s heart—the persistent voice whispering that an eighteen-year age gap, a multi-million-dollar wealth disparity, and the ghost of a dead wife named Rebecca were insurmountable walls.

“Why are you doing this?” Claire whispered, her voice cracking slightly. “If the debt is cleared legally, what do you even want with a struggling bakery in Maple Hollow?”

Victoria’s smile widened, cold and predatory. “It’s not about the bakery, Claire. It’s about sending a message. Nathan thinks he can walk away from Vance Capital with seventy million dollars and leave us holding an empty bag? He’s wrong. We want his entire portfolio. And you are the easiest leverage to break him.”

Victoria checked her diamond-encrusted wristwatch.

“You have twenty-four hours. Sign the relinquishment papers, pack your bags, and take a very long bus ride out of Michigan. If you’re still here tomorrow at noon, I file the injunction with the federal regulators, and Nathan Cole loses everything.”

Without waiting for an answer, Victoria turned on her high heels, walked back across the street, got into her black sedan, and sped away, leaving Claire standing alone on the wooden porch as the wind began to howl through the maple trees.
