Chapter 4 - The Iron FortressDawn was breaking over Lake Michigan when the armored SUV finally passed through the wrought-iron gates of Dominic Vale’s estate in the northern suburbs.

It wasn't a home; it was a limestone fortress surrounded by high walls, security cameras, and armed guards patrolling the perimeter.

Rachel sat in the passenger seat, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, glaring out the window at the manicured gardens that looked absurdly peaceful given the chaos of the night.

"You're holding me hostage," she stated flatly as Dominic killed the engine.

"I'm keeping you alive," Dominic corrected, opening her door and offering a hand. She ignored it, sliding out on her own and stumbling slightly on the gravel. He caught her elbow effortlessly. "Careful. You're exhausted."

"I'm exhausted because I spent four hours pulling lead out of your lieutenant's leg and the rest of the night running from psychotic mobsters!" Rachel snapped, pulling her arm away. "Where is my phone? I need to check on my clinic."

"Destroyed in the tunnel when the ceiling collapsed behind us," Dominic said calmly. "And as for your clinic, Grant’s detail went in at sunrise. The Vanguard torched it to the ground."

Rachel stopped dead in her tracks.

The words hit her like a physical blow. The clinic. Her second-hand monitors. Betty the autoclave. The framed diploma she had earned after eight years of living on instant ramen and sheer willpower. Gone. Reduced to ash by a mob war she never asked to join.

Her green eyes welled with sudden, hot tears of frustration and grief, though she refused to let them fall.

Dominic watched her face, his hard expression softening into something dangerously gentle. He stepped closer, closing the distance between them.

"Everything inside that basement can be replaced," he said softly.

"You don't understand," Rachel whispered, her voice cracking for the first time. "That was everything I had built. My independence. My life."

"Then let me build you a better one," Dominic replied, his voice low and intense. "A fully equipped surgical suite. State-of-the-art equipment. No rent, no bills, no threats from corrupt hospital boards. All you have to do is stay here, practice your art, and keep my family breathing."

Rachel looked up into his striking gray eyes, seeing the immovable power of a man who owned half the city, yet noticing the raw, quiet vulnerability hidden just beneath the surface—the debt he had carried for six years.

"And what happens when your enemies come here?" she asked.

Dominic’s lips curved into that familiar, devastating grin.

"Let them try. Nobody gets past the gates."
