Chapter 6 - The Poisoned ChaliceThe morning sun brought no warmth, only a chilling piece of intelligence delivered by Grant during breakfast in the grand dining hall.

"Vance isn't working alone," Grant said, laying a thick manila folder next to Rachel’s coffee cup. "Intercepted communications show he’s allied with the federal prosecutor’s office. They’re putting together a RICO case against Dominic, and they’re using the underground medical clinic as the smoking gun."
Rachel stared at the files. Photographs of her old basement clinic, bank statements showing the twenty thousand dollar transfer from Dominic’s account, and signed affidavits from corrupted hospital administrators claiming she was an unlicensed underground organ-harvester working for the Vale syndicate.
"They're framing me," Rachel said, her hands shaking as she dropped the papers. "If the FBI gets hold of these files, I'll lose my medical license permanently. I'll go to prison for twenty years."
Dominic sat across from her, calmly buttering a piece of toast. He didn't look worried; he looked lethal.
"They won't get the files," Dominic said smoothly.
"How can you be so calm? Your entire empire—and my entire life—is being dismantled piece by piece!"
"Because Vance made a critical mistake," Dominic said, his gray eyes flashing with cold satisfaction. "He tried to bribe the wrong federal agent. My contact inside the prosecutor's office just sent me the original copy of the indictment. But to neutralize it completely, we need to draw Vance out into the open."
"And how do we do that?"
Dominic looked straight across the table, his gaze locking onto hers with terrifying clarity.
"By hosting a charity gala at the Drake Hotel this Saturday. You will go as my date, wearing a dress worth more than my first car. Vance will be there trying to finalize his deal with the prosecutor. And that is where we end this."

Rachel stared at him in disbelief. "You want to use me as bait at a high-society mafia gala?"
"I want to end the war," Dominic corrected quietly. "And I trust you to watch my back as much as you trust me to watch yours."
