Chapter 1 - The Ten Shadow FleetThe silence in Mara’s small third-floor apartment was usually her sanctuary, a quiet haven where the vibrations of the passing elevated train were the only gentle reminders of a world moving outside. But at 5:14 AM, the floorboards didn't tremble from the train.

They shook with the deliberate, heavy idling of multiple high-displacement V8 engines.
Mara stood by her tiny kitchen counter, a cold cup of instant coffee in her right hand and a thick white bandage wrapped around her torn left palm. She approached the window, pressing her fingers against the glass to gauge the frequency of the movement below.
Parked in two precise parallel lines down her narrow, trash-strewn alley were ten matte-black Cadillac Escalades.
Their dark-tinted windows reflected the dim red glow of the rising dawn. No police sirens. No flashing lights. Just an overwhelming, predatory presence that sealed both ends of the street.
Before Mara could step back, her front door frame rattled. Three short, heavy vibrations—not a knock, but a tactile command.
She turned slowly. In her pocket, her thumb rested against her trauma shears, the blade still faint with the metallic scent of burnt seatbelt weave. She walked to the door and pulled it open.
Standing in the hallway were two men in tailored charcoal suits. Their coats were unbuttoned just enough to reveal the leather harnesses of shoulder holsters. The man on the left had a jagged scar running from his earlobe to his collar; the man on the right was taller, holding a heavy leather briefcase.
The scarred man’s lips moved with crisp, deliberate force. Mara read them instantly:
"Dr. Rossi sends his regards, Nurse Vale. Walk with us, or we bring the hospital to your floor."
Mara didn't flinch. She raised her left hand, pointing directly at the bandage covering her torn flesh, then pointed to her ears and shook her head once.
The tall man paused, glancing at his partner. His lips moved: "She’s deaf?"
The scarred man stepped forward, leaning into Mara’s field of vision so his face was bathed in the dim hallway light. His expression changed from cold muscle to calculated scrutiny. He spoke again, slower this time:
"You saved the head of the Moretti Syndicate last night. Half the city wants him dead. The other half wants to know what he whispered to you before the tank exploded."
Mara met his gaze without blinking. She raised her hands and signed sharply: I don't know who he is. I only know he was dying.
The tall man pulled out a leather notebook and a pen, scribbling quickly before shoving it toward her:
He gave you a name. He gave you a word. What was it?
Mara took the pen. Her hand was steady as she wrote below his line:
He asked my name. I gave it to him. He said nothing else.
May you like
The scarred man stared at her handwriting, then lifted his eyes to meet hers. A dark, dangerous smile played on his lips.
"That silence of yours, Nurse Vale," he mouthed clearly, "is either going to make you an heiress... or get you buried under six feet of wet concrete by sunset."
