Chapter 2 - The Blood-Stained Ledger of Saint Jude’sThe interior of the lead SUV smelled of expensive leather, cigar smoke, and polished steel. Mara sat in the middle row between the two enforcers. She kept her back rigid, feeling every shift of the vehicle’s transmission as they tore through the city toward the private wing of Saint Jude’s Memorial Hospital.

She knew the hospital layout by heart—she had worked seventy-hour weeks in its trauma bay for four years. But they didn't take her through the ambulance bay. They routed her through the underground service elevator, past two dozen armed guards standing at attention in dark suits.

When the elevator doors opened on the penthouse floor, the atmosphere felt heavy, charged with invisible tension.

Inside the isolation room, surrounded by six state-of-the-art heart monitors and an artificial ventilator, lay the man from the silver sedan.

Stripped of the smoke and blood, his features were carved from granite—sharp jawline, dark hair silvered at the temples, and a deep, stitched laceration along his collarbone. This was Lucian "The Ghost" Rossi, the undisputed ruler of the Eastern Seaboard’s underground supply lines.

Standing by the foot of the bed was a man in a pristine three-piece navy suit. His hair was slicked back, his eyes sharp and analytical. He turned as Mara entered, his lips moving swiftly:

"I am Julian, Lord Rossi’s chief counsel and brother in arms. You are the nurse who dragged eighty kilograms of muscle out of a fiery furnace."

Mara did not respond. She walked straight to the bedside monitor, her professional instincts overriding her fear. Her eyes scanned the telemetry readouts: heart rate 112, blood pressure stabilizing at 110 over 70, intracranial pressure within normal limits.

Julian stepped into her line of sight, blocking the screen.

"The police report says the brake lines on Lucian's sedan were severed with a high-density plasma cutter," Julian’s lips formed the words with chilling precision. "Only three people in North America knew he was taking the harbor road last night. One was me. One was his lieutenant, Viktor. And the third was the mole inside our inner circle."

Julian leaned down until his face was inches from Mara’s.

"Before the car exploded, Lucian spoke to you. The fire department dashcam shows his lips moving against your cheek. You are deaf, Nurse Vale, but you read lips better than a forensic investigator."

He held up a tablet displaying high-definition, zoomed-in footage of the crash site. The video showed the white flash of the explosion, Mara pulling Lucian across the pavement, and Lucian’s pale face turning toward her ear right before she collapsed.

"Tell me what he saw," Julian demanded. "Tell me who betrayed him."

Mara took a deep breath, her pulse steadying. She looked Julian dead in the eye and signed clearly, translating each gesture with cold precision:

He didn't give me a traitor's name. He said one word before he went under: 'Phoenix'.

Julian’s face drained of color. He staggered back a half-step, his confident posture shattering in an instant.

Behind them, the heart monitor began to beep in a erratic, frantic rhythm.
