Chapter 9 - The Truth in the Ashes"Speak!" Mara rasped out loud, her voice unpracticed, harsh, and cracking under the weight of twenty years of unaddressed trauma. "LOOK AT ME!"

Lucian slowly turned around.
For the first time since she had pulled him from the burning car, the terrifying Mafia Boss looked vulnerable. He walked toward Mara, stopping right at the barrel of her raised gun.
He leaned forward until the front of her pistol rested directly against his chest, right over his heart.
He spoke, his lips moving slowly, carefully, ensuring every single syllable was completely clear to her:
"Your father was not an engineer who died by accident, Mara. He was my mentor. He built the underground vaults beneath this city to hide innocent people from the old cartels."
Mara’s eyes burned with unshed tears, her finger trembling on the trigger.
"Twenty years ago," Lucian continued, "Mayor Sterling’s father locked your dad inside that vault because he refused to build a smuggling tunnel for their drugs. I was eighteen years old. I tried to set off the release charges to blow the doors open and get him out."
Lucian touched the jagged scar along his collarbone.
"The charges went off early. I failed to pull him out in time. The explosion destroyed the dock, stole your hearing, and killed the only man who had ever treated me like a son."
Lucian stepped closer, pushing his chest harder against her gun barrel.
"I have spent twenty years hunting the men responsible for that night," he mouthing with profound, raw emotion. "The car crash on the harbor road wasn't a hit on me. I was coming to find you, Mara. I found your name on Sterling’s hit list three days ago."
Mara stared at his gray eyes. She looked for a flicker of deceit, a trace of hesitation, a single sign of manipulation.
She saw none. Only the hollow, aching grief of a man who had been carrying the same burning secret she had carried her entire life.

Behind them, a metallic click echoed through the damp air.
Mayor Sterling had pulled a hidden derringer pistol from his boot, aiming directly at Mara’s back.
