Chapter 6 - The Harbor of GhostsThe rain was falling in relentless grey sheets over Boston Harbor when the three-car convoy arrived at Terminal 4.

Mara sat in the front passenger seat of Lucian’s custom armored sedan. Beside her, Lucian was wearing a dark tactical overcoat, his face pale from blood loss, but his eyes burning with an unyielding rage.

Through the rain-streaked windshield, Mara watched the massive shipping containers stacked like colossal brick towers against the dark ocean.

Dozens of armed men in police tactical gear—not syndicate enforcers, but uniformed officers from the Special Tactical Unit—were patrolling the pier. Parked beneath a massive overhead crane was a sleek white yacht, and standing on the gangway was Mayor Richard Sterling, flanked by Viktor.

"They're using city police resources to move syndicate cargo," Julian whispered from the backseat, passing a high-powered thermal scope to Lucian. "Sterling isn't just taking bribes; he’s taking over the entire distribution network."

Lucian looked at Mara. "What are they saying?" he asked, pointing the thermal optic toward Sterling and Viktor standing under the pier overhang.

Mara lifted the scope to her eye. The magnified image brought Mayor Sterling’s face into razor-sharp focus. His lips were moving rapidly as he gestured toward a steel shipping container being lowered by the crane.

Mara read his lips, translating in real-time with an unwavering voice:

" 'The federal agents are bribed... The paper trail leads entirely to Lucian’s personal accounts... Once the ship clears international waters, release the video of the hospital shootout... Make the nurse look like his accomplice...' "

Mara paused, her breath hitching in her throat.

"What else?" Lucian pressed, his hand resting on her arm.

Mara leaned closer to the optic, her eyes widening as Sterling turned to Viktor and spoke again:

" 'She doesn't know her own father was the one who built this harbor vault twenty years ago... The Vale family legacy ends tonight.' "

Mara pulled back from the scope, her heart stopping.

Her father.

Her father had been an underwater structural engineer who supposedly died in an accidental industrial explosion at Terminal 4 when Mara was five years old—the exact same week the fever had taken her hearing.

She looked at Lucian, her jaw tight, her hands trembling not from fear, but from a sudden, white-hot fury.

She grabbed her notepad and wrote in large, jagged block letters:

THE MAYOR KILLED MY FATHER.

Lucian stared at the note, then looked at Mara. The cold, ruthless mafia kingpin seemed to soften for a fraction of a second. He reached out, gently cupping her chin, forcing her to look at his lips:

"Then tonight, Nurse Vale, we don't just survive. We take everything from them."
