Chapter 12 - The Ghost of MonacoMarius stood over the glass coffee table in the living room, his face carved from pure granite. The photograph lay between us, the red target burning like an open wound under the recessed ceiling lights.

"Who has access to this encryption, Marius?" I asked, pacing the room, my silk robe fluttering around my legs. "Katya is dead. Julian is hiding in South America under a court protection program. Who else knew about your father's ledger?"

Marius didn't answer immediately. He poured two fingers of straight bourbon, downed it in a single gulp, and stared out at the shimmering Mediterranean.

"There was a fifth founder," Marius said, his voice dropping into a register so dark it sent chills down my spine. "Before my father consolidated power in Naples, there were five families who formed the Archon Council. They controlled every port from Marseille to Istanbul. When my father took the crown, he executed four of them."

"And the fifth?"

" don't know," Marius admitted, turning his gray eyes to me—eyes filled with a sudden, rare shadow of doubt. "His name was never recorded. He was called The Sovereign. He operated exclusively through proxies. My father thought he killed him in 1998 in Monte Carlo."

"Evidently, your father failed," I said coldly. "And now he’s coming for us."

Two days later, we were in Monaco.

The Casino de Monte-Carlo was a cathedral of gilded excess, filled with high-stakes gamblers, Russian oligarchs, and international arms dealers. I wore a backless crimson silk dress that clung to every curve, my dark hair pinned up with diamond-encrusted needles. Marius stood beside me in a bespoke charcoal tuxedo, his hand resting possessively against the small of my back. Beneath his jacket, a low-profile titanium pistol rested against his ribs.

We weren't there to gamble. We were there to follow the money.

Six hours prior, our Swiss banker had flagged a micro-transaction: fifty million dollars had been withdrawn from our primary off-shore account through a private node located inside the Casino’s underground VIP vault.

"Stay close to me," Marius whispered, his breath warming my ear as we walked through the velvet-curtained VIP hall. "If this is an ambush, the exits are sealed within three seconds."

"I know how to clear a room, Marius," I reminded him softly, my hand surreptitiously slipping into my evening clutch, where a compact 9mm sat ready. "You taught me yourself."

We stepped into the private high-rollers' lounge. The air smelled of expensive cigars, crystalized cognac, and stale power.

In the center of the room, sitting at a green felt baccarat table surrounded by six armed guards, was a woman wearing a black veil.

When she saw us enter, she slowly raised her hands, slid back her veil, and smiled.

My heart stopped.

The left side of her face was horribly scarred from burns—relics of the Pier 14 explosion—but the sharp, predatory eyes were unmistakable.

"Hello, Bianca," Katya whispered. "You look stunning in red."
