Chapter 16 - Blood in the Snow"Mother," I said, my hand resting on the grip of the pistol concealed in my heavy wool coat.

Elena Rossi took a slow sip of her wine, setting the crystal glass down on a side table with a light clink. She stood up smoothly, without a trace of the physical weakness that had bound her to a bed for my entire adult life.
"Look at you," Elena purred, stepping toward me, her eyes sweeping over my practical tactical clothes and the fierce, lethal set of my jaw. "So strong. So cold. So breathtakingly capable. You are everything I dreamed you would become when I placed you in Marius's lap four years ago."
Marius stepped into the room, his gun raised, his sightline locked directly onto my mother's chest. "It ends tonight, Elena. The Archon network is exposed. Interpol has the digital footprints from Monaco."
Elena didn't even flinch at the sight of the gun. She chuckled—a light, melodic sound that filled the room.
"Oh, Marius," she sighed pityingly. "You always were so delightfully blunt, just like your brute of a father. Do you really think Interpol is coming for me?"
She gestured to the massive digital wall screen above the fireplace. It flickered to life, displaying a live feed of global financial markets, military satellite tracking systems, and dark-web data streams moving trillions of dollars every second.
"Your father thought he was a Don, Marius," Elena said, her eyes flashing with cold, supreme intelligence. "He thought territory was about streets, docks, and shipping containers. He was a caveman with a club. I built the invisible system that controls the banks that buy those streets."
"You used my father," I said, stepping between Marius and my mother. "You had him murdered."
"Your father was a weak, moralizing fool who wanted to take my three hundred billion dollars and donate it to international charities!" Elena spat, her calm facade momentarily breaking into pure, venomous disgust. "He lacked vision! He lacked ambition! So I had Vito Orlov put a bullet in his head, and I used Vito’s fear to build a protective shield around you while I constructed the global ledger!"
"And me?" I asked, my voice cracking slightly despite my best efforts. "Was my entire life a lie? The medical bills? The sacrifices I made to keep you alive?"
"They weren't lies, Bianca; they were training!" Elena insisted, stepping closer, holding out her hands to me. "I needed you to learn humility! I needed you to understand the power of money! I needed you to infiltrate the Orlov network, learn their operational logistics, and earn Marius's absolute devotion!"

She pointed a long, manicured finger at Marius.
"And it worked!" Elena laughed victoriously. "Look at him! The most feared Don in Europe destroyed his own empire, faked his death, and abandoned his life's work—all for you! You possess the ultimate weapon, Bianca: you control the man who controls the guns!"
