Chapter 9 - The Execution RoomMidnight. Pier 14 was swallowed by a thick, freezing Neapolitan fog. The yellow floodlights of the shipping yard cut through the mist, illuminating massive metal shipping containers stacked like multi-colored brick walls.

The dock was eerily quiet, save for the rhythmic sloshing of seawater against the rusted hull of a massive cargo ship.

Inside Warehouse 7, Katya stood surrounded by twelve heavily armed Camorra enforcers and Julian Vance—who was tied to a chair in the center of the room, his face bruised and bloody.

"Is the Interpol tip verified?" Katya demanded, turning to the Camorra lieutenant beside her.

"Yes," the lieutenant grunted. "The police units are five minutes away. Once Marius arrives to check the cargo, he'll be trapped between us and the cops. He dies tonight, Katya. And your little assistant friend takes the fall."

Suddenly, the heavy metal roll-up doors of the warehouse blew inward in a deafening firestorm of heat, concrete, and flying metal!

KABOOM!

The explosive shockwave knocked half the Camorra enforcers off their feet. Smoke and blinding red flares flooded the warehouse.

Through the red haze stepped Marius Orlov. He was dressed in a long black trench coat, carrying a high-caliber assault rifle, his face set in an expression of terrifying, apocalyptic rage.

Behind him marched his loyal army of fifty heavily armed Orlov soldiers, sweeping into the room with military precision.

"Marius!" Katya screamed, drawing her gun, but Marius was already moving.

Gunfire ripped through the warehouse. The sound was deafening, a chorus of thunder and dying screams. Marius moved like a god of war, dropping enforcers with brutal, single-shot efficiency, advancing straight through the kill zone toward Katya.

I ran in behind the secondary entry team, dressed in a tactical vest, carrying a light handgun Marius had given me an hour prior. My eyes swept the chaos, searching for Katya.

I saw her creeping behind a stack of wooden crates, raising her weapon toward Marius’s exposed back while he was engaged with two Camorra gunmen.

"Marius! Right!" I screamed.

Katya turned her weapon toward me instead, her face twisted in venomous hatred. "You ruined everything, you little bitch!"

She pulled the trigger.

BANG!

A shot echoed—but it didn't come from Katya's gun.

Katya froze. She dropped her weapon, looking down in shock at the gaping hole in the center of her chest.

Behind her stood Julian Vance—his hands freed from his ropes, holding a dropped pistol, his hands shaking violently as smoke curled from the barrel.

Katya collapsed to the floor, motionless.

Marius spun around, clearing the remaining gunmen, and rushed toward me. He grabbed me by the shoulders, pulling me into his chest, checking me for injuries once again.

"You're safe," he breathed, pressing his forehead against mine, his heart hammering wildly. "You're safe, Bianca."

I looked over his shoulder at Julian, who was cowering on the floor, weeping hysterically, dropping the gun.

"What about him?" I asked softly.

Marius looked at Julian, then back at me. "He saved your life. He gets to live. But my world is over tonight, Bianca."

"What do you mean?" I asked, frowning.

Sirens wailed in the distance—dozens of Interpol police cars were screaming down the dock road, their blue lights flashing through the foggy windows of the warehouse.

Marius looked at me with a strange, beautiful smile—a smile of total, liberating freedom.

"It's time to burn the empire," he whispered.
