Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage"I am not going to your villa," I said, standing my ground in the chilly Neapolitan night air outside the restaurant. "I have my own apartment. I have my own life."

Marius opened the rear door of his armored Maybach himself, ignoring my protest entirely. "Your apartment was swept two hours ago by my security team. We found three long-range audio bugs planted in your baseboards. The Camorra knows who you are, Bianca. They know you are the key to my operations."

My stomach plummeted into a cold, bottomless abyss. "Bugs? In my home?"

"Get in the car," he said, his tone leaving zero room for negotiation.

I swallowed my pride and stepped into the leather-scented interior of the Maybach. Marius slid in beside me, closing the heavy door. The car glided smoothly into the Neapolitan traffic, flanked by two black SUVs.

For ten minutes, the silence inside the cabin was suffocating. I stared out the tinted window at the passing streetlights, my mind racing. I was furious at his overbearing control, but underneath the anger, a terrifying realization was dawning: my quiet, protected life was a illusion. Marius hadn't just protected me from the world; he had hidden the world's dangers from me for three long years.

"Why didn't you tell me?" I asked quietly, my voice cracking slightly. "Why let me believe I was just an assistant?"

Marius didn't look at me. He was staring straight ahead, his hands resting on his knees. "Because if you knew how deep the mud was, you would have looked at me with fear instead of respect. And I couldn't bear the thought of you looking at me the way you look at the monsters who haunt your mother's nightmares."

I turned my head to look at his profile—the sharp nose, the harsh blade of his cheekbones, the faint scar through his eyebrow.

"You are a monster to them, Marius," I whispered.

"Yes," he agreed softly, finally turning his head to meet my gaze. "To them, I am the devil. But to you... I have been a saint, haven't I? I gave your mother her life. I gave you power. I gave you safety."

"And what do you want in return?" I challenged, leaning closer to him, desperate to break through his unyielding stone wall. "Loyalty? Absolute obedience? Or something else?"

Marius’s eyes darkened. He reached out, his long, warm fingers gently cupping the back of my neck. His thumb brushed over the pulse point at my jaw, feeling the erratic, wild beat of my heart.

"I wanted to keep you clean, Bianca," he whispered, his voice dripping with a agonizing mixture of desire and restraint. "I wanted to be the one man in your world who didn't take something from you. But tonight... when I saw another man touch your hand... I realized I am not a good man. I am selfish. And I will burn down all of Naples before I let another man have what is mine."

"I am not yours," I breathed, though my heart traitorously hammered against his palm.

"You've been mine since the day you stood in front of my desk and didn't flinch when I signed a death warrant in front of you," he murmured.

May you like

The car ground to a smooth halt. We were inside the high, stone-walled courtyard of his fortress estate in Posillipo.

"Welcome home, Bianca," Marius said, releasing my neck. "You aren't leaving again."
