Chapter 2 - THE UNRAVELING OF A LIE

The graduation ceremony ended in absolute chaos. While Joanna rushed to the stage to throw her arms around Simon, Denise was busy trying to salvage her relationship with Jonathan in the parking lot.
"Jonathan, please! You don't understand, my sister brainwashed him!" Denise cried, grabbing his arm. "She’s jealous of me! She's always been jealous of my success, my beauty, everything! She raised him to hate me!"
"She didn't have to raise him to hate you, Denise. You did that yourself," a voice cut through the damp afternoon air.
It was George, their father. For 19 years, George had stayed quiet, letting his wife Dorothy dictate the family dynamics to keep the peace. But seeing his grandson stand up on that stage had awakened something long buried in him. He walked over, carrying the cake box, and dumped it face-down into a nearby trash can.
"George! What are you doing?" Dorothy gasped, running up behind him. "Denise is our daughter! We have to support her!"
"She is a liar, Dorothy, and so are we for letting this go on for so long," George said, his voice trembling with age and regret. He looked at Jonathan. "Sir, if you want the truth, Denise hasn't paid a single dime for that boy. Joanna worked herself to the bone. Denise only showed up when she wanted a photo to look good. If you marry this woman, you are marrying a fraud."
Jonathan’s face went pale. He looked at Denise, who was sweating through her emerald-green suit. "We're done, Denise. Get your own ride home."
Without another word, Jonathan climbed into his luxury SUV and drove off, leaving Denise standing in the dusty parking lot, her heels sinking into the gravel.
Denise let out a screech of rage, turning her fury toward Joanna and Simon, who were walking out of the building. "You ruined my life!" Denise screamed, lunging toward them. "You ungrateful little brat! I gave birth to you! You would be nothing without my blood!"
Simon stepped in front of Joanna, shielding her. "Your blood gave me life, but Joanna’s love kept me alive. Go away, Denise."

"I will sue you!" Denise yelled, her eyes wild. "I will sue both of you! Joanna, you took my son! You brainwashed him! You'll pay for this!"
But the threats felt empty. As the crowd dispersed, Denise was left standing with only Dorothy by her side, while George walked over to Joanna and Simon, offering a silent, tearful apology in the form of a tight embrace.
