Chapter 5 - THE SECRET WEAPON

The tension of waiting for the DNA results was suffocating. Joanna couldn't sleep. She didn't care about the eighty-five million dollars; she only cared about Simon. But Denise’s threat hung over her like a dark cloud.

Three days before the final court hearing, Dorothy knocked on Joanna’s door. She looked pale and frail, her eyes red from crying.

"Joanna, please let me in," Dorothy pleaded.

Joanna stepped aside, allowing her mother into the small living room. "Why are you here, Mom? To tell me I should give up and let Denise have everything?"

"No," Dorothy whispered, sinking into the sofa. "I'm here because... because I can't live with the guilt anymore. George is leaving me, Joanna. He says he can't look at me after what we did."

"What did you do, Mom?" Simon asked, walking into the room.

Dorothy pulled a dusty cassette tape and an old medical document from her purse. "Nineteen years ago, Denise didn't just leave Simon because she was tired. She left him because she was running from a scandal. Marcus Vance didn't dismiss her. She was fired because she tried to blackmail him with a fake pregnancy."

Joanna’s jaw dropped. "What?"

"Simon... you are not Marcus Vance's son," Dorothy confessed, her voice breaking. "Denise got pregnant by a local mechanic named Bobby. But she wanted money. She tried to convince Marcus it was his. When Marcus demanded a DNA test, she panicked, stole money from his office, and fled. She left Simon with you because she was terrified Marcus’s investigators would find her."

Simon stood frozen. "So... the trust. It’s all a lie?"

"Yes. But Denise has paid a corrupt lab technician to falsify the DNA results for the court hearing on Friday. She’s going to present a fake positive test to steal the Vance estate. And she’s going to blame Joanna for the 'kidnapping' of Marcus’s heir to get Joanna thrown in prison."

Joanna felt her stomach drop. Denise wasn't just greedy; she was evil. She was willing to put her own sister in prison to secure a fortune that didn't belong to her.

"Why are you telling us this now, Mom?" Joanna asked, tears streaming down her face.

Dorothy looked at her younger daughter, the one who had never asked for anything, yet had given up everything. "Because you are the only real mother in this family, Joanna. And I won't let Denise destroy you."
