Chapter 4 - THE LAWSUIT

The peace they had fought so hard for was shattered. Two days later, Joanna was served with court papers. Denise was suing for full back-custody of Simon—even though he was 19 and legally an adult—arguing that Joanna had "abducted and alienated" him since infancy.

Denise’s play was clear: if she could prove Joanna was an unfit guardian who had kept Simon illegally, she could invalidate any claim Joanna had on him, gain control of the multi-million dollar trust, and ruin Joanna’s life in the process.

The courtroom was packed. Dorothy sat on Denise’s side, looking uncomfortable but loyal to her eldest daughter, while George sat firmly behind Joanna and Simon.

Denise’s lawyer, a aggressive man named Henderson, stood up. "Your Honor, my client was a young, vulnerable mother who suffered from severe postpartum depression. She left her child with her sister temporarily, trusting her family. Instead, Joanna cut off all communication, brainwashed the child, and hid him from his mother to extort money. Now, she is trying to steal a multi-million dollar inheritance that belongs to my client’s lineage."

Joanna felt a tear slip down her cheek. She looked at her hands, worn out from years of hard labor.

Then, Simon’s lawyer—hired pro-bono by Arthur Pendelton, who wanted to ensure the true heir was protected—stood up. "Your Honor, we have evidence to present. Not of alienation, but of absolute abandonment."

He presented a series of old ledger books. "These are Joanna’s personal diaries and financial logs from the last nineteen years. Every single medical bill, every school tuition receipt, every penny spent on Simon was paid for by Joanna. We also have a record of Denise’s tax returns from the last fifteen years. She claimed Simon as a dependent to get tax write-offs, while never paying a single dollar in child support."

The judge frowned, looking at Denise. "Is this true, Ms. Denise?"

"I... I gave him gifts! I bought him an iPad!" Denise stammered, her voice high-pitched.

"You bought him an iPad for social media photos, which you then took back and sold when you needed quick cash," Simon spoke up from the defense table, his voice cold. "I remember, Denise. I was ten. You took it out of my hands because you said I didn't deserve nice things."

The judge slammed the gavel. "Order! We will recess for DNA testing to establish paternity regarding the Vance estate. But as for the custody and alienation charges, this court finds them utterly baseless."

But Denise wasn't done playing dirty. As the court recessed, she leaned over to Joanna and whispered, "You think you've won? If the DNA test proves he’s Marcus’s son, I will make sure neither of you sees a dime. I have a secret weapon, Joanna. And it will destroy you."
