Chapter 6 - THE TRUTH SETS THEM FREE

The day of the final hearing arrived. The courtroom was packed with journalists, attracted by the scent of a multi-million dollar scandal involving the Vance estate.

Denise sat confidently at her table, wearing a brand-new designer dress, already celebrating her impending victory. Henderson, her lawyer, stood up with a smirk. "Your Honor, we have the official DNA results from the certified lab. They prove with 99.9% accuracy that Simon is the biological son of Marcus Vance."

The courtroom murmured. Denise let out a soft, theatrical sob of triumph.

"Before the court accepts these results," Arthur Pendelton stood up, his voice ringing with authority, "we request the court to review a submission of emergency evidence. We have a witness, and a secondary, independent DNA test conducted by the state forensic unit."

Denise’s smirk vanished. "What? No! The test my lawyer has is the only official one!"

"Let the witness step forward," the judge ordered.

To Denise's horror, Dorothy walked to the stand. She took the oath, her hands shaking, but her voice steady. For the next twenty minutes, Dorothy confessed everything—the blackmail, the escape from Ohio, the corrupt lab technician Denise had paid, and the truth about Simon's real father, Bobby, who had passed away years ago.

She submitted the old cassette tape—a recording of Denise bragging about her plan to blackmail the Vance estate—and the genuine medical records.

"My daughter Denise is a liar," Dorothy said, looking directly at her eldest child. "And I am a coward for helping her hide it. But Joanna... Joanna is a saint. She raised that boy with nothing but love and hard work."

The courtroom erupted into a frenzy. Photographers flashed their cameras as Denise screamed, "She's lying! She's old and senile! She's trying to ruin me!"

"Silence!" the judge roared, slamming the gavel. "Security, detain Ms. Denise and her counsel. An immediate investigation into medical fraud and attempted grand larceny will be launched."

As the bailiffs walked toward Denise, she lost all control. She kicked, screamed, and pointed at Joanna. "You think you won, Joanna? You're still poor! You're still nothing! You don't get a single dime of that eighty-five million!"

Joanna stood up, holding Simon’s hand tightly. She looked at her sister with pity, not anger.

"I don't need eighty-five million dollars, Denise," Joanna said softly, her voice carrying over the chaos. "I have my son. And that is a wealth you will never understand."

THE EPILOGUEOne year later.

The storm had finally passed. Denise was serving a prison sentence for fraud and grand larceny. Dorothy and George had reconciled, spending their days trying to rebuild their relationship with their daughters, though Joanna kept a healthy distance to protect her peace.

Simon sat at the wooden dining table in a new, bright apartment. He had received a full academic scholarship to a prestigious university, studying law so he could protect families like his own.

Joanna walked into the room, carrying a small plate of homemade gelatin desserts. She smiled, looking at her son—tall, confident, and whole.

"Are you ready for your first day of classes tomorrow, Simon?" she asked.

Simon stood up, wrapping his arms around her in a warm, tight hug. He looked at the simple blue dress she wore, now accompanied by a beautiful silver locket he had bought her with his part-time job earnings. Inside the locket was a picture of the two of them on his graduation day.

"I'm ready, Mom," Simon said.

For the first time in nineteen years, there were no secrets, no shadows, and no doubts. They didn't have millions in the bank, but they had the ultimate utility: a life built on truth, sacrifice, and an unbreakable bond.
