Denise stood near the front row, her phone still raised, her glossy lips parted in a frozen, confident smile. She expected a public thank-you, a sweet tribute she could upload to her social media to cement her image as the triumphant, self-sacrificing mother who had finally reunited with her son. / Chapter 3 / 6

Chapter 3 - THE STRANGER’S OFFER

Two weeks passed. The video of Simon’s graduation speech had gone viral on local social media, shared by classmates and parents who had witnessed the dramatic showdown. While Joanna and Simon received overwhelming support from the community, Denise’s reputation was completely destroyed. She had lost Jonathan, her wealthy social circle, and her dignity.

But desperate people do desperate things.

One evening, a sleek black car pulled up outside Joanna’s modest home. A man in a tailored grey suit stepped out. He didn't look like Jonathan; he was older, with sharp, calculating eyes and a demeanor that commanded authority. He knocked on the door.

Joanna answered, wiping her hands on a kitchen towel. "Yes? Can I help you?"

"Are you Joanna?" the man asked, removing his sunglasses. "My name is Arthur Pendelton. I am the attorney representing the estate of the late Marcus Vance."

Joanna’s heart skipped a beat. The name Marcus Vance was legendary in their state. He was a billionaire real estate mogul who had passed away six months prior. "I'm sorry, I think you have the wrong house. We don't know any Marcus Vance."

"You don't," Arthur said, looking past her to Simon, who was studying at the dining table. "But your sister Denise did. Nineteen years ago, Denise was employed as a personal assistant to Mr. Vance. Shortly before she disappeared to Ohio with a baby, she was dismissed from her position."

Simon stood up and walked to the door, his interest piqued. "What does that have to do with us?"

Arthur pulled a document from his briefcase. "Before Mr. Vance passed, he established a trust. He had no official heirs, but his will states that if any child of his blood exists, they are entitled to his entire estate—valued at eighty-five million dollars. Denise filed a claim two weeks ago, asserting that Simon is Marcus Vance's biological son."

Joanna gasped, grabbing the doorframe for support.

"She claimed she hid the child to protect him from the media," Arthur continued. "But after seeing the viral video of your graduation, I began to doubt her story. If Simon is indeed Marcus Vance's son, the inheritance belongs to him. However, there is a catch."
