Chapter 1 - THE ECHO OF BETRAYALThe silence in the grand ballroom was so heavy you could hear the soft humming of the air conditioning. Three hundred pairs of eyes darted between me, Brittany, and my father as he stood up from the head table.

I expected my father to discipline Brittany. I expected him—for once in his life—to feel a shred of embarrassment for how his golden child was behaving.

Instead, his face flushed dark red with anger, and he pointed an accusing finger straight at my chest.

"Megan! How dare you come back here after three years of silence just to stir up drama?" he roared, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "You walk in here wearing designer clothes, acting like you're better than everyone else! You couldn't let your sister have one night of peace without parading your fake success in front of the whole family!"

A quiet gasp rippled through the crowd.

Brittany immediately lowered her head, squeezing out a well-practiced tear. "I just wanted our family reunion to be special, Dad," she whimpered, her voice dripping with artificial agony. "And she walked in here... taking all the attention away from my engagement announcement!"

Engagement announcement? I scoffed softly. Of course. It was the eighteenth birthday party all over again—a public spectacle crafted to make Brittany the center of the universe.

My mother rushed to Brittany’s side, rubbing her back and glaring at me like I was a parasite. "Megan, you haven't changed at all. Still jealous. Still bitter. You couldn't stand seeing Brittany happy three years ago, and you can't stand it now."

I stood my ground, my hands folded calmly in front of my custom Armani suit. Three years ago, those words would have shattered me. Three years ago, I would have run to the parking lot in tears. But the girl who cried in the cold darkness of the Arlington Country Club was dead.

"Fake success?" I said, my voice dangerously calm, carrying effortlessly across the room. "Is that what you call it, Dad?"

"We know who you are, Megan!" Dad sneered, walking around the table toward me. "You always were a liar. You probably rented that outfit and paid someone to leak those articles about your company. You think you're a CEO? You're a disgraced dropout who abandoned her blood!"

I took a slow, deliberate step forward. "My company, Vanguard Holdings, just finalized the acquisition of the historic Arlington Estate complex yesterday morning."

Dad paused, his eyes narrowing. "What does that have to do with anything?"

I smiled—a sharp, cold blade of a smile. "It means, Father... you are currently standing on my property. And if you don't take your hand out of my face in the next three seconds, I will have security throw you, Mom, and Brittany onto the curb where you belong."

The ballroom erupted into chaotic whispers.
