Chapter 5 - BLOOD AND BANKRUPTCYMy mother froze. The color drained completely from her face, leaving her ghost-white.

"I... I don't know what you're talking about," she stammered, taking a step back.

"Don't lie to me!" I slammed my hands on the desk, standing up. "You and Dad committed grand identity theft against your own daughter! You tried to destroy my future before I even had one so Brittany could play princess! You gave her my party, you gave her my college fund, and you tried to give her my entire financial life!"

"We were desperate!" Mom sobbed, falling to her knees. "The market crashed! Brittany had so much potential, and you... you were always so quiet, so self-sufficient! We thought you could handle it!"

"So you decided to sacrifice me?" I laughed bitterly. "Because I was strong enough to survive it?"

"Please, Megan," she begged, clutching the edge of my desk. "If you report this to the federal prosecutors, your father will go to prison! Brittany’s life will be ruined! She'll never recover from the public shame!"

"Brittany ruined her own life the moment she decided to step on me to raise herself up," I said coldly. "And as for Dad... he should have thought about prison before he forged my signature."

I tapped my intercom. "Sarah, call federal investigators. Tell them I have the complete audit trail for the Brooks identity fraud case ready for pickup."

"No! Megan, please!" Mom shrieked, reaching for my phone, but security stepped into the office and escorted her out as she screamed and cried, her desperate pleas echoing down the hallway.

I thought that would be the end of it. I thought the legal system would deal with them, and I could finally close the chapter on the Brooks family forever.

I was wrong. Desperate people do dangerous things, and Brittany was the most desperate of them all.
