Chapter 8 - THE FINAL CHECKMATEBrittany’s words echoed in the empty mansion like a curse. But instead of breaking me, they cemented the absolute clarity of my vengeance.

"You knew?" I whispered. "You knew the whole time?"
"Of course I knew!" Brittany shrieked, taking a swing at me with the broken bottle. "And I’d do it again! You deserve nothing, Megan! Nothing!"
I easily dodged her wild, uncoordinated strike, grabbed her wrist, and twisted it downward. The broken bottle shattered onto the floor, and Brittany fell to her knees, screaming in pain as I ripped the heavy briefcase out of her hands.
Sirens wailed in the distance. Blue and red lights began flashing through the grand stained-glass windows of the foyer.
"The federal marshals are here, Brittany," I said, looking down at her as she sobbed hysterically on the floor. "And so is the state police. You aren't just facing accomplice charges for identity theft. You’re facing felony grand larceny for attempting to steal estate assets."
"Megan, please!" Brittany shrieked, crawling toward my boots, her glamorous facade completely annihilated. "We're sisters! You can't send me to prison! I won't survive in there!"
"We were never sisters," I said cold-heartedly, stepping backward out of her reach. "You were just a thief living on borrowed time."
The doors burst open, and armed federal officers swarmed the mansion, pinning Brittany to the floor and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists. Her screaming echoes filled the night air as she was dragged away into the back of a police cruiser.
EPILOGUE: THREE YEARS LATERThree years after that fateful night—six years after my eighteenth birthday—I stood in front of the exact same banquet hall at the Arlington Country Club.
The building had been completely renovated. The gold balloons were gone, replaced by elegant white orchids and minimalist glass architecture. Across the entrance wall hung a new, permanent bronze plaque:
THE CLARA STERLING FOUNDATION FOR EMPOWERED YOUTH.
I had reclaimed every single cent of my mother's multi-billion-dollar trust fund. My father and stepmother were currently serving fifteen-year sentences in federal prison for grand fraud, forgery, and identity theft.
And Brittany?
After serving two years for felony grand larceny, she was released on strict probation. Part of her mandatory court-ordered restitution required her to maintain steady employment.
I walked into the catering kitchen of the venue.
There, wearing a stained apron, scrubbing dirty dishes over a steaming sink, was Brittany.
She froze when she saw me standing there in my immaculate white tailored suit. Her hands trembled under the soapy water.
"Is the catering set for tonight's gala, employee?" I asked calmly.
Brittany bit her lip so hard it bled. Tears of absolute humiliation welled in her eyes, but she knew that one complaint from me would send her straight back to a prison cell.
"Yes... Miss Brooks," Brittany whispered, lowering her head in total submission. "Everything is ready."

I looked at her for a long moment, feeling no hatred, no anger—only the quiet, unshakeable peace of absolute victory.
I turned around and walked back into the shining spotlight of my own world, leaving the ghosts of my past behind in the dark.
