Chapter 6 - THE SECRET HEIRTwo weeks later, the news hit the national headlines: PROMINENT VIRGINIA DEVELOPER ARRESTED FOR MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD AGAINST HIS OWN DAUGHTER.

The public spectacle was immense. Brittany was dropped by her talent agency, her social media accounts were swarmed with hate, and Julian Vance publicly announced the total severance of all ties with the family.

I was sitting in my private residence late one evening when my lawyer, Marcus Vance (unrelated to Julian), knocked on my door. His face was grim.

"Megan, we have a massive problem," Marcus said, placing a thick, yellowed folder on my coffee table. "During the federal asset seizure of your father’s estate, investigators unlocked a private safety deposit box in Zurich."

"And?" I asked, sipping my tea.

"Your father’s real-estate business wasn't built on loans, Megan," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "It was built on an inheritance. An inheritance that belonged to you."

I paused, setting my cup down. "What are you talking about?"

"You aren't just their daughter, Megan," Marcus said, staring at me with deep sympathy. "Your biological mother wasn't Eleanor Brooks. Your father was married to a woman named Clara Sterling—the sole heiress of the Sterling Steel fortune. Clara died under extremely mysterious circumstances days after giving birth to you."

My heart stopped beating for a second. The world seemed to tilt on its axis.

"Clara left her entire multi-billion-dollar empire in a sealed trust that was supposed to automatically unlock on your eighteenth birthday," Marcus continued, opening the folder to reveal legal documents signed twenty years ago. "Your father married Eleanor—Brittany’s biological mother—six months after Clara died. Together, they plotted to keep you ignorant of your real mother's identity."

The pieces of the puzzle suddenly slammed together with terrifying clarity.

The eighteenth birthday party.

The gold balloons. The Arlington Country Club.

It wasn't just a petty act of favoritism. It was a calculated heist.
