Chapter 2 - The Master of the HouseJulian Hale stood in the doorway, brushing a dusting of wet snow from the shoulders of a bespoke charcoal overcoat. He was tall, sharp-featured, and impeccably groomed, but his eyes told a different story. They were cold, hollow, and shadowed by an exhaustion that money couldn't cure.

He stopped dead in his tracks.

His gaze moved from the bucket of dirty gray water to Jenna, standing frozen in her frayed gray uniform, and finally down to the five-year-old girl standing near his forbidden dining room.

A muscle ticked in Julian's jaw. "What is the meaning of this?" His voice was a low, resonant baritone that commanded obedience without shouting. "I explicitly told the agency no auxiliary staff after four o'clock."

"I... I apologize, Mr. Hale," Jenna stammered, stepping protectively in front of Daisy. "The cleaning service said the penthouse had to be completely detailed for your holiday guests. I miscalculated the time. We are leaving right now."

Julian didn't answer immediately. He stared at Jenna, his piercing gaze sweeping over her cracked hands, the cheap fabric of her coat draped over a chair, and the raw, quiet dignity in her posture. Something flickered in his eyes—a flash of recognition, or perhaps just annoyance at a disruption in his sterile, predictable world.

Then, Daisy stepped out from behind her mother.

She didn't cower. She looked up at the towering billionaire with wide, unblinking blue eyes, her stomach letting out a very audible, rumbling growl that echoed off the marble walls.

Daisy rubbed her tummy, looked back up at Julian, and asked the question that shattered the evening:

"Can we stay with you?"
