Chapter 3 - The Cold EquationJulian froze. In his world, people asked him for investments, for leniency, for venture capital, or for corporate restructuring. No one—least of all a stray child in a tattered coat—had ever looked at him and asked for shelter in a tone so devastatingly earnest.

"Daisy, hush," Jenna hissed, a hot wave of humiliation flushing her cheeks. She grabbed her daughter’s hand, pulling her back. "We are going. I am so sorry, Mr. Hale. I’ll make sure the agency doesn't send me back."

"Wait," Julian said.

The single word cut through the air like a scalpel. Jenna stopped, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Julian unbuttoned his coat, dropped it onto the valet chair with practiced precision, and walked slowly toward the dining room. He didn't look at Jenna; instead, his eyes were fixed on the massive spread of food.

"You're starving," Julian stated, not as a question, but as an empirical fact.

"We are fine," Jenna lied, her voice trembling slightly.

"She isn't fine," Julian countered sharply, turning his gaze back to Daisy. "And neither are you. Your hands are bleeding, Mrs.—"

"Carter. Jenna Carter."

Julian’s eyes narrowed instantly. The name hung in the air between them, heavy with history. A subtle shift occurred in his posture. The detached, aloof billionaire suddenly looked like a predator who had just spotted a ghost from his past.

"Carter," Julian repeated, tasting the syllables. "As in Arthur Carter? Carter Logistics?"

Jenna’s breath caught in her throat. The room seemed to tilt. "You... you remember."

"How could I not?" Julian's voice dropped an octave, devoid of warmth. "Your husband’s company was one of the worst-managed liabilities I’ve ever had to absorb. He cost my investors millions before he drove his car into a bridge."

"He didn't mismanage it!" Jenna snapped, her maternal fury momentarily overriding her terror. "You stripped the assets! You manipulated the contracts until he had nothing left to lose!"

Daisy, sensing the sudden hostility, began to cry softly, burying her face in Jenna's torn coat.
