Chapter 1 - The Mark of the Phoenix

The silence in the grand hall was heavy enough to crush a man. The echoes of the slap still seemed to vibrate off the golden columns, but all eyes were now locked on the girl’s collarbone. The crimson birthmark—a perfect, radiant shape of a rising sun—seemed to glow against her pale, bruised skin.
King Aldous stumbled down the marble steps of the throne. His crown, a symbol of absolute authority, tilted precariously on his head, but he didn’t care. His eyes, usually sharp and calculating, were wide with a mixture of profound shock and sudden, agonizing hope.
"Step back! All of you, step back!" the King roared, his voice cracking with an emotion the court had never heard from him before. The guards, who had been pinning the girl down, instantly retracted their hands as if burned.
The fake princess, Evelyn, felt a cold dread sink into her stomach. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Father!" she called out, her voice pitching higher in a desperate attempt to regain control. "What are you doing? She is a thief! A common kitchen servant who snuck into the inner sanctum to steal my jewelry! Do not let her theatrics deceive you!"
But King Aldous ignored her entirely. He dropped to his knees right there on the cold stone floor, right in front of the dirt-covered girl. With trembling fingers, he reached out, gently pulling the torn fabric of her dress slightly wider to reveal the entirety of the mark. It wasn't just a birthmark. It was the Sol Regalis—a genetic anomaly that appeared only once every few generations in the direct line of the true monarchs. It was identical to the one his lost daughter, Princess Aurora, had been born with before the tragic palace fire fifteen years ago.
"Your name..." the King whispered, his eyes misting over with tears. "Child, what is your name?"
The girl shrank back, terrified. She had spent her entire life being kicked, beaten, and told she was nothing. To have the most powerful man in the kingdom kneeling before her was more terrifying than the guards' swords. "I... I am just Sarah, Your Majesty," she sobbed, pressing her hand against her burning cheek where Evelyn had struck her. "I didn't steal anything. The Princess dropped her bracelet, and I was only trying to return it..."
"Liarg!" Evelyn shrieked, rushing down the steps. "She is a fraud! Guard, execute her for treason and black magic! She has painted that mark on her skin to mock the royal family!"
"SILENCE!" King Aldous bellowed, standing up. The sheer force of his voice made Evelyn stumble backward. The King turned to the Royal Physician, who was standing among the nobles. "Lord Caelen. Bring the Water of Truth. Now."
A collective gasp rippled through the courtroom. The Water of Truth was a sacred relic—water drawn from the ancient Moonwell that would wash away any illusion, magic, or dye, but would make a true royal birthmark glow with brilliant light.

Evelyn’s face drained of color. Behind her jeweled mask, her mother, Duchess Malvina—the woman who had orchestrated the swap fifteen years ago—clenched her fists so hard her nails drew blood.
As Lord Caelen approached with the silver bowl, the entire court held its breath. Evelyn looked at Sarah, her eyes burning with pure, murderous hatred. If the truth came out today, it wouldn't just be the end of her royalty—it would be the execution block for her entire family.
