Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Cup

The moon hung low over the castle towers, casting long, eerie shadows across the stone corridors. Aurora couldn't sleep. The grand bed felt too soft, the room too quiet. She missed the familiar, comforting hum of the kitchen hearth.

Driven by restlessness, she wrapped a shawl around her shoulders and decided to find her father. She wanted to talk to him, to understand the mother she never knew.

As she approached the dungeon corridors, she noticed the guards stationed at the entrance were slumped against the wall, unconscious. Aurora’s heart skipped a beat. Her instincts, sharpened by years of surviving in the harsh palace underbelly, told her something was deeply wrong. She crept forward, silencing her footsteps.

Inside the dimly lit interrogation cell, King Aldous stood before Evelyn. A single silver goblet of wine sat on a small table between them.

"Tell me the truth, Evelyn," the King said, his voice weary and broken. "Did you know? Did your mother know?"

Evelyn fell to her knees, sobbing violently. "I swear to you, Father! We knew nothing! We were told by the late Duke that I was the child pulled from the ashes. Please, drink some wine, calm your anger. I am your daughter in spirit, even if not in blood!" She gestured toward the goblet.

The King sighed, reaching for the cup. He raised it to his lips.

"NO!"

Aurora burst into the cell, throwing her body forward. She slammed into the King’s arm, knocking the silver goblet from his hand. The wine splashed across the stone floor, hissing violently as it ate away at the mortar between the stones. It was highly concentrated acid poison.

The King stared at the floor in horror, then looked up at Evelyn.

Evelyn’s mask of innocence completely shattered. Seeing her plan fail in a matter of seconds, she let out a feral scream, grabbed a hidden dagger from her boot, and lunged straight at Aurora. "You ruin everything! You dirty servant! Die!"

Aurora, agile from years of hard labor, dodged to the side, but Evelyn managed to slash her arm. Blood dropped onto the floor. Before Evelyn could strike again, the King, fueled by a father’s rage, grabbed a heavy iron torch holder from the wall and struck the dagger out of Evelyn's hand, pinning her against the wall.

"Guards!" the King roared.

The inner palace guards, alerted by the commotion, finally burst into the room.

"Arrest her! And bring me Duchess Malvina in chains!" the King commanded, his voice shaking with fury. He turned to Aurora, wrapping a cloth around her bleeding arm. "You saved my life, Aurora. You saved me twice."

Evelyn laughed hysterically as the guards dragged her away. "You think you've won? My mother has already initiated the final phase! Look out the window, old man! The palace is already ours!"
