Chapter 2 - The Crimson Verdict

The Royal Physician knelt beside Sarah. With a reverent hand, he dipped a white silk cloth into the shimmering Water of Truth. The courtroom was so quiet you could hear the flickering of the torches.
"Hold still, child," Lord Caelen murmured softly. He pressed the wet cloth against Sarah’s collarbone, wiping firmly over the red sun mark.
Evelyn leaned forward, praying to whatever dark gods would listen that the mark would wash away, that it would smudge, that it would prove to be a cheap dye.
Instead, the moment the sacred water touched the skin, a brilliant, warm golden light emanated from the birthmark. It didn't wash away; it grew brighter, casting a soft glow over Sarah’s tear-stained face. The light pulsed in perfect sync with the rhythm of her heartbeat.
"It... It is impossible," Lord Caelen breathed, dropping the silver bowl. The water splashed across the floor, but no one looked at it. The physician turned to the King, his eyes filled with awe. "Your Majesty... it is the true bloodline. The magic of the founding ancestors recognizes her. She is not a servant. She is Princess Aurora."
The court erupted into chaos. Ministers began murmuring frantically, and the nobles pulled off their masks in disbelief.
"My daughter..." King Aldous choked out. The stern, hardened ruler collapsed into tears, wrapping his arms around the bewildered girl on the floor. "My sweet Aurora... you're alive. You've been here all along."
Sarah—now Aurora—lay frozen in the King's embrace. Her mind spun. A princess? The daughter of the King? The very ruler she had watched from afar while scrubbing the palace floors? She looked past the King's shoulder and met the gaze of Evelyn.
Evelyn was trembling, but the panic in her eyes was quickly transforming into something venomous. She caught the eye of her mother, Duchess Malvina, who gave her a sharp, imperceptible nod. They had to pivot, and they had to do it now.
"Father!" Evelyn cried out, suddenly throwing herself to her knees beside them, forcing fake tears down her cheeks. "Oh, thank the heavens! This is a miracle! If she is the true Princess Aurora, then... then who am I? I was brought to you as a baby after the fire! I believed I was your daughter! I have been deceived as well!"
It was a brilliant chess move. By playing the victim of a mysterious past deception, Evelyn was trying to protect herself from the charge of treason.
King Aldous stood up, keeping one protective hand on Aurora’s shoulder. His eyes hardened as he looked at Evelyn. "If she is Aurora... then you are an impostor. And whoever placed you in my arms while my real daughter bled in the servants' quarters will pay with their lives."

The King turned to the Captain of the Guard. "Lock the palace doors. No one leaves. Search every record, question every nanny from fifteen years ago. And as for this girl—" he looked down at Evelyn "—strip her of her royal crest. Until we find the truth, she is confined to the dungeons."
"No! Father, please!" Evelyn screamed as two heavily armored guards grabbed her by her silk sleeves, dragging her away from the throne she had claimed as hers for fifteen years. As she passed Aurora, she hissed under her breath, "This isn't over, rat. I will burn you just like they did fifteen years ago."
