Chapter 3 - Secrets in the Shadows

The transformation was dizzying. Within hours, Sarah the kitchen maid was bathed in perfumed oils, dressed in gown of soft blue silk, and seated at the right hand of the King in the private royal solar.

Yet, Aurora felt more out of place than ever. The silk scratched against the scars on her back—scars left by the heavy hand of the head housekeeper. She stared at the feast before her but couldn't bring herself to eat.

"You are safe now, my darling," King Aldous said, his hand resting over hers. "I have ordered the finest physicians to tend to you. The woman who struck you will never harm you again."

"Your Majesty... Father..." Aurora whispered, the word feeling foreign on her tongue. "How could this happen? If I am your daughter, why was I left in the scullery? Who took me?"

The King’s expression darkened. "The night of the great fire, the palace was attacked by rebels. The royal nursery was engulfed in flames. My trusted advisor at the time, Duke Malvina’s late husband, emerged from the smoke with a baby wrapped in a scorched blanket. The baby had a scar where the birthmark should have been, which he claimed was a burn from the fire. I was blinded by grief. I believed him."

He clenched his fist. "Now I see the truth. It was a coup from within. But fear not, the lineage is restored."

What the King did not know was that deep within the palace dungeons, the plot was far from dead.

Duchess Malvina stood outside Evelyn's cell, having bribed the guards with a pouch of diamonds. Evelyn pressed her face against the iron bars, her eyes wild. "Mother! You have to get me out! The King is investigating! If they find the old nurse maid in the northern village, she will talk!"

"Calm yourself, you foolish girl," Malvina hissed, her voice a sharp whisper. "The nurse maid has already been... silenced. Permanently. The King has no proof that we knew you weren't the real princess. We can still turn this around."

"How?!" Evelyn spat. "She has the birthmark! The whole court saw it!"

Malvina smiled, a cold, sickening expression. "A birthmark only matters if the person carrying it stays alive to inherit the throne. The King is old, Evelyn. His heart is weak. If both the King and the new 'Princess' were to die in a sudden, tragic accident... the crown would default to the next closest noble bloodline. Which is us."

Malvina slipped a small, black glass vial through the bars into Evelyn’s hand. "The King will visit you tonight to interrogate you privately. He will want to know if you had any knowledge of the swap. Put three drops of this into his wine. It mimics a heart attack. Once the King is dead, the palace will fall into chaos, and my personal guard will handle the little kitchen rat."

Evelyn clutched the vial, a dark, wicked smile returning to her lips. "She took my crown. I will take her life."
