Chapter 6 - The True Dawn

Thwack!

The bolt flew through the air. But Aurora didn't flinch. She swung the flaming sword in a perfect arc, slicing the wooden bolt in half mid-air. The pieces fell to the floor, smoldering.

Before Evelyn could reload, the doors of the grand hall burst open. The Captain of the Guard, having successfully rallied the remaining royal army outside, flooded into the room with hundreds of loyal soldiers. The mercenaries, seeing the magic of the flaming sword and the overwhelming royal reinforcements, threw down their weapons in surrender.

Malvina fell to her knees, her face twisted in defeat. Evelyn dropped the crossbow, staring at Aurora with wide, terrified eyes. The power dynamic had completely inverted. The servant she had slapped in public just days ago now stood above her, engulfed in the light of the gods, holding the weapon of a conqueror.

Aurora lowered the sword, the flames subsiding into a gentle, golden glow. She walked up to Evelyn.

The courtroom was silent once more, beneath the very same towering golden columns and crimson velvet curtains where this nightmare had begun.

Aurora raised her hand. Evelyn flinched, closing her eyes, expecting a blow that would shatter her jaw in return for the slap she had given.

But the blow never came. Aurora gently placed her hand on Evelyn’s jeweled mask, pulling it off and tossing it onto the floor.

"I am not like you," Aurora said, her voice clear, resonant, and filled with absolute majesty. "I do not rule with violence and lies. You slapped a servant because you thought she was nothing. I spare your life because I know exactly who I am."

Aurora turned to the Captain of the Guard. "Take them. Let the high court judge their treasons. They will spend the rest of their days working the very scullery and mines they forced others to suffer in."

"Long live Princess Aurora!" the Captain shouted.

The entire courtroom fell to their knees—ministers, nobles, and soldiers alike—bowing deeply to the girl covered in dirt, blood, and royal light.

Three Months Later...The grand hall was filled to capacity, but this time, the atmosphere was one of joy. The crimson curtains had been replaced with bright white and gold banners.

King Aldous, looking healthier than he had in decades, stood before the throne. Beside him stood Aurora, dressed in magnificent ceremonial armor, her hair braided with gold ribbons. Her birthmark was proudly displayed, uncovered for the world to see.

"People of the Realm," the King announced, his voice echoing with pride. "The darkness has passed. The true dawn has arrived. I present to you your Crown Princess, and the future Queen of our land."

As the crowd erupted into thunderous applause, Aurora looked out over the court. She caught the reflection of herself in the polished marble floor. She was no longer the broken girl who wept at the feet of tyrants. She was the protector of her people.

But just as the King was about to place the golden crown upon her head, a breathless messenger burst into the hall, falling to his knees.

"Your Majesty! A discovery in the secret vaults of Duchess Malvina!" the messenger panted, holding up an ancient, sealed scroll. "It is the true royal registry from the night of the fire! Princess Aurora... you were not the only child born that night. The birthmark... it belongs to twins."

The crown slipped from the King's hand, clattering against the stone floor. Aurora froze as the messenger revealed the final words of the scroll:

"The second twin was smuggled across the eastern sea... and he has just landed on our shores with an armada."
