Chapter 1 - The Bread Roll’s SecretThe silence in the grand hallway was deafening. Margaret stepped closer, her eyes flashing with a strange, cold urgency. "Daniel, don't be naive. People like us are targets. You throw money at this problem and hand them over to the state tomorrow. Do not let them stay another hour."

"They stay until CPS arrives," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a tone that left no room for argument. "Now if you came here to help, sit down. If you came to judge two traumatized toddlers, leave."

Ethan shifted uncomfortably, avoiding Daniel’s gaze, while Lauren adjusted her leather handbag nervously. They left shortly after, leaving behind a heavy layer of suspicion. Why was his mother so afraid of two small children?

That evening, as Daniel prepared a light meal, Ivy sat on the kitchen counter, still clutching the dried bread roll. She hadn't let go of it since he found them.

"Ivy, sweetheart," Daniel said gently, kneeling beside her. "Can Uncle Daniel hold that for a moment? We can put it in a safe box so it doesn't break."

Ivy shook her head furiously, tears pooling in her big brown eyes. "No! Mommy Helen said inside is the secret. If we give it to bad people, Mommy won't come back."

Daniel’s heart skipped a beat. Inside?

He carefully took the stale, hard roll into his hands. It felt unnaturally heavy toward the center. With extreme care, Daniel began breaking away the hard, baked crust. Crumbs showered onto the granite counter. As he peeled back the dense dough, his fingers hit something hard, wrapped in thin layers of plastic wrap.

He pulled it out. It was a micro-SD card and a folded piece of waterproof paper written in shaky, hurried handwriting.

Daniel opened the paper first.

“Daniel, if you are reading this, I am likely dead. My name is Helen. I was Claire’s private nurse during her final six months. Claire didn’t die of her illness. They were slowly poisoning her. And these girls... Ivy and Skye... they aren't strangers. They are Claire’s biological daughters, born via a surrogate Claire secretly arranged before her condition deteriorated. Your mother and brother found out. Look at the card. Save your daughters.”

Daniel’s breath caught in his throat. His knees buckled, and he was forced to grip the edge of the counter to stay upright. Claire’s daughters? My daughters?

He rushed to his study, plugged the micro-SD card into his laptop, and clicked on the main folder. The screen flickered to life, revealing audio files and hidden camera footage.

The first video played. It showed his late wife Claire, pale and frail, lying in a hospital bed inside this very house. But beside her was not a doctor—it was his mother, Margaret, holding a syringe, standing alongside Ethan.

"Once she's gone, Daniel will be too broken to manage the estate," Margaret’s voice resonated clearly through the speakers. "Ethan takes over the holdings. But we must find where she hid the offshore trust for the unborn twins..."

Daniel froze. His blood ran cold. The woman he called mother had killed his wife.

Suddenly, the lights throughout the entire lake house flickered once... twice... and went pitch black.

From the dark corridor outside the study, the heavy sound of a window shattering echoed through the house, followed by muffled, heavy footsteps.

CHAPTER 1 HOOK: The lights are out, intruders are inside the home, and Daniel now knows the terrifying truth: the monsters who murdered his wife have returned to finish off his daughters.
