Chapter 5 - The Frame JobThe television inside a small motel room in Minneapolis played the breaking national news headline:

"BREAKING NEWS: BILLIONAIRE DANIEL WHITMORE WANTED FOR KIDNAPPING AND PREMEDITATED MURDER."
The news anchor’s voice was grim. "Authorities report that Daniel Whitmore, CEO of Whitmore Holdings, has suffered a severe psychological breakdown following the tragic death of his wife, Claire. Police now suspect Whitmore poisoned his late wife to claim her private inheritance and has now abducted his brother's twin daughters. He is considered armed, extremely dangerous, and mentally unstable."
Daniel sat on the edge of the motel bed, holding his head in his hands.
It was a masterclass in psychological warfare. Margaret hadn't just stolen his children and murdered his wife; she had flipped the entire narrative. She turned Daniel into the villain in the eyes of the entire world. If the police found him now, they wouldn't ask questions—they would open fire.
"Daddy?" Skye walked over, holding a small plastic cup of water. "Don't cry. We are safe now."
Daniel looked up, pulling his daughter into his lap. He looked at Ivy, who was quietly drawing pictures on a pad of paper Marcus had provided.
He couldn't fight this in the shadows anymore. He needed to strike at the heart of Margaret's empire.
He called Marcus on the encrypted burner line.
"Daniel! Thank God you're alive," Marcus breathed heavily. "It’s a disaster down here. Margaret has seized temporary control of Whitmore Holdings board of directors. She’s freezing all your personal and corporate bank accounts as we speak. You have zero funds starting tomorrow morning."
"She’s backing me into a corner," Daniel said calmly, an eerie calm washing over him. "Where is she holding the annual shareholder gala this Thursday?"
"The Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago," Marcus answered. "It’s the biggest corporate event of the year. Every major media outlet, investor, and law enforcement official in the state will be in that ballroom."
"Good," Daniel said, his eyes darkening with cold resolve. "That’s where we finish this."
"Daniel, you can't just walk in there! There are dozens of federal agents looking for you. The second you show your face, you will be arrested or shot!"
"Not if the world watches her confession live," Daniel replied.
"What are you planning?"
"I need you to contact Helen's family—the nurse who saved my daughters. Where is she?" Daniel asked.
Silence lingered on the line for three agonizing seconds.
"Daniel..." Marcus’s voice dropped to a whisper. "Nurse Helen was found dead in her apartment yesterday morning. They ruled it a hit-and-run."
Daniel’s blood boiled. Helen had sacrificed her life to get those girls to him. The hard roll she gave them was her final act of bravery before Margaret’s hitmen tracked her down.
"Then her death won't be in vain," Daniel declared. "Marcus, I need you to procure three things for me by Thursday: an unfiltered broadcast override key, access to the hotel’s main media server, and a secure location for my daughters."
"I can protect the girls," Marcus promised. "My wife and I will take them to a hidden safehouse guarded by federal marshals I trust with my life."
Daniel looked at his small, beautiful twin daughters. This was the most dangerous gamble of his life. If he failed on Thursday, he would either be dead or locked away in a high-security prison forever, leaving his daughters at the mercy of wolves.
He knelt down in front of Ivy and Skye.
"Daddy has to go away for a little bit to fix things," he told them gently. "Uncle Marcus is going to take care of you for two days."
Ivy wrapped her tiny arms around Daniel’s neck, hugging him as tightly as she could. "Don't let bad Grandma hurt you, Daddy."

"She won't," Daniel whispered, tears stinging his eyes. "Daddy promises."
