Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Lake HouseDaniel’s instincts kicked in instantly. He shut the laptop, ripped the SD card out, and crammed it into his pocket. Moving blindly in the absolute dark, he sprinted toward the upstairs bedroom where Ivy and Skye were sleeping.

Heavy footsteps pounded up the wooden staircase behind him.

"Check the bedrooms!" a harsh, unfamiliar voice barked from the dark hallway. "Find the girls and the drive! The old lady said no loose ends!"

Daniel slipped into the girls' room, scooping both toddlers into his arms before they could cry out. Pressing his hand over Ivy’s small mouth, he whispered softly into her ear, "Shh, baby. We’re playing a hiding game. Stay completely quiet."

Skye buried her face into his chest, trembling violently.

Daniel knew the lake house inside out. Before Claire passed, she had installed a hidden panic safe-room behind the master closet—a space only he and Claire knew existed. Sliding through the shadows, Daniel slipped into the master suite, pressed a concealed latch behind a row of coats, and shoved the heavy reinforced door shut just as footsteps stormed into the master bedroom.

BANG! BANG!

Heavy fists slammed against the bedroom door outside. "They aren't in the main rooms! Search the closets!"

Inside the soundproof safe-room, Daniel sank to the floor, pulling his daughters tight against his chest. Tears streamed down his cheeks as he held them. They smelled like sweet milk and dusty wind—Claire’s scent faintly lingered on Skye's hair. They were his flesh and blood, hidden from him by a web of greed and murder.

He pulled out his phone. No signal. A jammer was operating nearby.

For three agonizing hours, Daniel listened through the security monitor as the intruders trashed the home, tearing open couch cushions, smashing glass, and searching frantically for the SD card.

When dawn finally broke, the house fell deathly silent.

Daniel waited until 8:00 AM before cracking the safe-room door open. The lake house was ruined. Paintings torn down, drawers dumped, Claire’s belongings scattered mercilessly across the floor.

He carried the girls out to his SUV, strapped them into the back, and sped away from Lake Geneva toward Chicago. He couldn't trust the local police yet; he didn't know how far his mother’s influence reached.

He needed an ally. He drove straight to the private law firm of Marcus Vance—his late wife’s childhood friend and a high-stakes corporate attorney.

When Marcus saw Daniel walk through the door, exhausted, bruised, holding two frightened toddlers, his eyes widened.

"Daniel? What on earth happened to you?"

Daniel laid the micro-SD card on the heavy mahogany desk. "My mother killed Claire. And these two girls are Claire’s daughters. I need you to run a secret DNA test, and then I need you to help me destroy my family."

Marcus went pale. He reached for the SD card, but before he could insert it into his computer, his desk phone rang. Marcus answered, listened for three seconds, and his face drained of all color.

He looked up at Daniel with pure terror in his eyes.

"Daniel... do not leave this room. The police are outside. Your mother just filed an emergency warrant accusing you of kidnapping Ethan’s twin daughters!"

CHAPTER 2 HOOK: Margaret isn't just trying to cover up a crime—she is framing Daniel for kidnapping his own children, turning the entire legal system against him.
