Chapter 5 - THE MASTERMIND’S MASK

Nora froze, the tire iron slipping an inch in her grip.
She looked from Victoria’s shocked face up to Julian. Victoria looked just as stunned as Nora was.
“Julian?” Victoria whispered, looking at her son. “What are you doing with a gun? Who are you talking to?”
“Oh, shut up, Mother,” Julian said, his tone dropping into a terrifyingly cold, condescending calm. “You really thought you were the mastermind behind all this? You thought you were the one controlling the estate?”
Victoria stepped back, her face pale. “Julian... I did all of this for you! I pushed Elena out so you would inherit the Whitmore empire!”
“You did it because you were greedy and short-sighted,” Julian scoffed, descending the marble stairs step by step, the gun never wavering from Nora. “You were clumsy. You left breadcrumbs. Elena found out about your embezzling, but she also found out about my real father.”
Nora’s eyes widened. “Your father?”
Julian reached the bottom of the stairs, standing ten feet from Nora.
“Arthur Whitmore isn’t my grandfather,” Julian revealed, a sickening grin spreading across his face. “And my mother’s ex-husband wasn’t just some failed businessman. My biological father is Victor Vance—head of the Vance Crime Syndicate. The man who funded this entire mansion through blood money thirty years ago.”
The pieces fell into place with devastating speed.
Victoria hadn’t just been ambitious; she was a puppet. But she hadn’t realized that her own son was raised to be the ultimate Trojan horse inside the Whitmore family.
“Eighteen years ago, Elena found out that the Vance Syndicate was using Whitmore Enterprises to launder black-market weapons capital,” Julian explained smoothly. “She downloaded the entire financial network onto that tiny micro-card you’re holding. She was going to Arthur. But my father’s people threatened to kill her baby—you, Nora—if she didn’t run.”
Nora felt a tear slip down her muddy cheek. Her mother hadn’t fled out of cowardice. Elena had sacrificed her life, living in squalor and starvation, just to keep Nora alive and keep the card out of the Syndicate’s hands.
“And now,” Julian continued, taking another step closer, “Arthur is upstairs, currently slip-sliding into a permanent coma thanks to the slow-poison regimen I’ve been feeding him for six months. My mother thinks she’s taking over, but as soon as Arthur dies, the Syndicate will release documents showing Victoria poisoned him. She goes to prison for murder, I inherit 100% of the estate as the sole untainted heir, and the Vance Syndicate takes total control.”
Victoria gasped, clutching her throat. “Julian... I’m your mother!”
“You were a useful stepping stone,” Julian replied without even looking at her. “Now, Nora... hand over the card.”
“And if I don’t?” Nora hissed, her knuckles white on the tire iron.
“Then I shoot you, take it off your corpse, and frame your death as a botched burglary,” Julian said simply. “You have three seconds.”
“One.”
Nora lowered her head. She looked at the tiny card in her fingers.
“Two.”
Nora looked up into Julian’s cold, lifeless eyes.
“Three—”
“Catch!” Nora screamed.
Instead of handing it over, Nora threw the tiny micro-card with all her strength—not toward Julian, but straight into the blazing, roaring fireplace at the side of the grand hall.
“NO!” Julian screamed.
For a split second, Julian’s instinct took over. He spun around, lunging toward the fireplace to save the priceless piece of technology.

That fraction of a second was all Nora needed.
She didn't run for the door. She charged Julian like a wild animal, driving the heavy steel tire iron directly into his ribs with a sickening CRACK.
