Chapter 6 - THE BLOOD-RED REVENGE

Julian let out a strangled cry as he crashed to the marble floor, the pistol skidding out of his hand and rolling across the polished stone.

“Mother! Get the gun!” Julian roared, clutching his broken ribs.

Victoria stood frozen, her eyes wide with terror, torn between her traitorous son and the terrifying reality of her ruined life. But greed proved stronger than betrayal. Victoria dove for the gun on the floor.

Before her fingers could touch the metal, a heavy leather boot came down hard on Victoria’s wrist.

SNAP.

Victoria shrieked in agony, pulling her hand back and curling into a ball on the floor.

Nora stood over the gun, breathing heavily, rain and sweat dripping from her chin. She picked up the silenced pistol, racked the slide with a sharp, practiced motion she had learned from years of surviving in the city’s worst neighborhoods, and aimed it straight at Julian’s head.

“Get up,” Nora commanded, her voice terrifyingly steady.

Julian groaned, pushing himself up onto his knees, blood dripping from his lip. He looked at the fireplace. The micro-card was sitting in the glowing embers, melting into a lump of useless plastic.

“You fool...” Julian spat, coughing up blood. “You destroyed the only evidence! You destroyed the only thing that could have brought down the Syndicate!”

“I didn’t destroy it,” Nora whispered.

A ghost of a smile touched her lips.

From her maid apron pocket, Nora pulled out the real micro-card.

Julian’s eyes went wide. “What... what did you throw?”

“A piece of plastic from the dashboard of your car,” Nora said, her tone dripping with ice. “My mother raised me in the slums, Julian. I learned how to sleight-of-hand steal before I could read. You thought I was just a starving maid. You forgot that starving people learn how to survive.”

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the mansion were kicked open with a thunderous boom.

A squad of heavily armed tactical officers in federal law enforcement gear flooded into the foyer, laser sights cutting through the dim light.

“FBI! NOBODY MOVE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!”

Behind the tactical team, walking slowly with the aid of two federal agents, was Arthur Whitmore.

He was pale, his hospital gown visible under his heavy coat, but his eyes were sharp, glowing with an unholy fury.

“Grandfather!” Nora gasped.

Arthur walked down the hall, passing the kneeling, sobbing Victoria and the bleeding Julian. He didn’t even glance at his stepdaughter. His eyes were fixed entirely on Nora.

“I heard everything, Julian,” Arthur said, his voice deep and echoing in the grand room. “The hidden microphones in my study... the ones you installed to spy on me? My chief of security flipped them two hours ago after I showed him Elena’s dossier.”

Julian’s face drained of all color. “Arthur... listen to me—”

“Silence!” Arthur roared. “You poisoned me. You hunted my daughter. You tried to murder my granddaughter!”

Arthur turned to the FBI Special Agent in Charge. “Take them both away. Ensure they are placed in maximum security, separate facilities. I want the Vance Syndicate dismantled by midnight.”

As the agents slammed handcuffs onto Julian and Victoria, dragging them out into the pouring rain, Victoria turned back toward Nora, her face distorted by rage and despair.

“You ruined us!” Victoria screamed, her voice echoing into the night. “You were just a maid! You were nothing!”

May you like

Nora stood tall in the center of the grand foyer, holding the locket in her hand.

“I was never just a maid,” Nora said softly as the doors slammed shut on Victoria forever. “I was the storm you forgot was coming.”
