Chapter 3 - The Proof in the Code

The independent laboratory results didn't take weeks. In the world of billionaires, money bought acceleration, and within four hours, a courier hand-delivered a sealed manila envelope to the private study of Julian’s penthouse.

Outside, the city lights twinkled like a distant galaxy, casting a cold, neon glow through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Inside, the room was thick with tension.

Victoria had refused to leave. She sat stiffly on the edge of a velvet armchair, her arms crossed, her face carved from stone. Harrison Vance stood behind her like a loyal hound waiting for a cue to attack.

I sat across from them on the leather sofa, holding Rose softly against my shoulder as she nursed a warm bottle.

Julian stood by the fireplace, a glass of amber scotch untouched in his hand. He hadn't spoken a single word since we left the boardroom. He just stared into the empty hearth.

"Open it, Harrison," Julian commanded, his voice deadpan.

Harrison stepped forward, snatched the envelope from the side table, and ripped it open. He pulled out the multi-page document, his eyes scanning the technical medical jargon rapidly. As he read, the color completely drained from his face. His hands began to visibly shake.

"Well?" Victoria snapped, losing her patience. "Read it, Harrison! Prove that this little beggar girl is a fraud!"

Harrison swallowed hard, looking up slowly to meet Julian’s piercing gaze. He couldn't form the words. Instead, he wordlessly handed the document to Julian.

Julian took the paper. His eyes swept down to the final conclusion paragraph, highlighting the genetic probability metrics.

Biological Paternity Probability: 99.999%. Subject: Hartwell, Julian / Subject: Hartwell, Rose.

The paper fluttered from Julian’s fingers, landing softly on the Persian rug.

Victoria jumped up from her chair, snatching the paper off the floor. Her eyes darted across the text, and for a terrifying second, her mask of cold perfection slipped, revealing an expression of pure, unadulterated panic.

"This is forged," Victoria spat, waving the paper in the air. "It has to be! She paid off the lab! Julian, don't be a fool! This is a setup to trap you in your own fortune!"

"The lab was chosen by my own corporate compliance team, Victoria," Julian said quietly. His voice carried a lethality that chilled the room. "Independent third-party verification. There was no tampering."

Julian turned away from the fireplace and finally looked at me—really looked at me—for the first time in a year. The arrogance that had once defined him was gone, replaced by a haunting emptiness.

"Clara," he whispered, taking a slow step toward the sofa. "Why didn't you tell me? When you found out... why did you vanish? Why didn't you call?"

I gently laid Rose down in her portable bassinet, making sure she was fast asleep before standing up to face him. I didn't cower. I didn't look down.

"Call you?" I let out a dry, humorless laugh. "Julian, do you remember the last conversation we had in this exact room a year ago? You told me that my presence was dragging down your social standing. You told me your lawyers would handle the divorce settlement, and that my belongings would be shipped to a P.O. box. When I tried to tell you... when I went to your office to say I was feeling sick, your secretary locked me out for three hours and told me Mr. Hartwell doesn't see unannounced guests."

Julian flinched, his jaw tightening painfully.

"And when I found out a week later that I was pregnant," I continued, stepping closer until I was standing right in front of him, "I realized something liberating. I realized I didn't need your charity, your pity, or your name. I spent nine months working two jobs, selling my wedding ring to pay for prenatal care, and crying myself to sleep while you planned your grand merger with the Sterling family."

"Clara, I didn't know—"

"Of course you didn't know!" I snapped, my voice finally breaking through the wall of control I had built. "Because to you, people aren't human beings! We're assets or liabilities on a balance sheet! And now that my daughter is a certified asset with your DNA, you think you can just write a check and play proud father of the year?"

Victoria stepped forward, her eyes narrowing into slits. "Listen to me, you little gold-digger. You might have trapped him with a brat, but you will never take my place. Julian’s board will never allow a public scandal. We will sue for full custody, brand you unstable, and bury you so deep in legal fees you'll never see daylight again!"

Before Julian could respond, the heavy mahogany doors of the study flew wide open.

Standing in the doorway was an elderly man leaning heavily on a silver-headed cane, flanked by two armed security guards. It was Arthur Hartwell—Julian’s iron-fisted grandfather and the actual founder of the Hartwell empire.

"That's enough," the old man thundered, his voice shaking the crystal chandelier. "No one is suing anyone. Not while my great-granddaughter is under this roof."
