Chapter 4 - The Patriarch’s Decree

The room fell into an eerie, suffocating hush. Arthur Hartwell, eighty-two years old and semi-retired from active management, rarely intervened in corporate affairs anymore. But when he spoke, boardrooms shook and executives resigned.

Julian straightened up immediately, reverting from an unraveled father back into the obedient grandson who had inherited an empire. "Grandfather. What are you doing here? This is a private matter."

"Private?" Arthur scoffed, hobbling forward with sharp, calculated steps, his cane tapping rhythmically against the floorboards. "You call the discovery of the sole heir to the Hartwell bloodline a private matter? While you stand here arguing with your discarded wife and your flashy mistress like children in a schoolyard?"

Victoria bristled, her face reddening. "Mr. Hartwell, with all due respect, my family and the Hartwell board—"

"Save your breath, young lady," Arthur cut her off coldly, raising a wrinkled hand. "I didn't spend sixty years building this empire so my dynasty could be hijacked by a social-climbing PR stunt. The Sterling merger is suspended, effective immediately."

Victoria gasped, taking a step back as if she had been physically slapped. "Suspended? Mr. Hartwell, your grandson signed a binding preliminary agreement! If you walk away now, the stock market—"

"Let the market burn," Arthur snapped. "My bloodline comes before your stock tickers."

He turned his gaze away from Victoria and slowly walked past Julian, stopping right in front of the bassinet where little Rose was sleeping peacefully. The old man’s stern, weathered face softened in a way I had never seen before. He leaned down slightly, peering at the tiny infant.

"She has my late wife's nose," Arthur murmured, a genuine, bittersweet smile touching the corners of his mouth. He looked back up at me, his sharp eyes filled with unexpected warmth and respect. "You've had a hard year, child. I had my suspicions that Julian was making the biggest mistake of his life when he tried to push you out. I just didn't realize how right I was."

"Thank you, Mr. Hartwell," I said quietly, keeping my guard up. "But I didn't come here for your sympathy. I came to finalize the divorce and secure my daughter's future independently."

"Nonsense," Arthur said, turning back to face the room with renewed authority. "There will be no divorce. The divorce petition is hereby permanently dismissed."

"Grandfather, wait," Julian protested, stepping forward. "Clara and I need to talk this through properly. You can't just force a marriage back together—"

"I am not forcing anything," Arthur interrupted sharply. "I am fixing your colossal mess. Clara, listen to me. If you walk out of this penthouse tonight with that baby, Harrison Vance and a dozen corporate sharks will hound you with non-disclosure agreements, custody battles, and injunctions for the next ten years. They will try to grind you into dust."

I felt a cold shiver run down my spine. He was right. As powerful as I felt today, I was still a single mother with empty bank accounts against a multi-billion-dollar legal machine.

"What is your alternative?" I asked, my eyes narrowing.

"You stay here," Arthur declared, looking around the room at Julian, Victoria, and Harrison. "In this penthouse. Not as a cast-off wife hiding in the shadows, but as the co-owner of this household and the mother of the future heir. Julian will prove himself worthy of you, or I will strip him of his CEO title and hand the entire conglomerate to charity."

Victoria let out a strangled shriek of fury. "This is insane! Julian, you're not going to let a senile old man dictate your life! Choose me! Choose our future!"

Julian stood frozen in the center of the room. He looked at Victoria—his ticket to absolute media dominance—and then he looked at me, and finally down at the sleeping baby who shared his blood.

The silence stretched on, heavy and absolute.

Julian slowly turned his head toward Victoria. The hesitation in his eyes was entirely gone.

"Get out, Victoria," Julian said softly.

Victoria stared at him, her mouth open in disbelief. "You... you're throwing me away for her? For a crying baby and an ungrateful ex?"

"Get out," Julian repeated, his voice rising to a terrifying, commanding roar that shook the glass windows. "Before I have security throw you out."

Humiliated, enraged, and utterly defeated, Victoria grabbed her designer bag, glared at me with pure venom, and stormed out of the penthouse, slamming the heavy doors behind her. Harrison Vance scurried out right behind her like a rat fleeing a sinking ship.

The penthouse doors clicked shut.

We were finally alone. Arthur Hartwell gave me a reassuring nod, tapped his cane, and walked toward the private elevator, leaving Julian and me standing on opposite sides of the room.

Julian took a deep breath, looked at me with raw, pleading eyes, and took his first step across the room toward us.
