Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Reckoning

The flashing lights of fifty news cameras blinded us the second we stepped down the steps of the police precinct. Microphones were shoved into our faces, and reporters shouted over one another in a chaotic frenzy.
“Mrs. Hartwell! Is the baby a fraud?” “Julian, did you orchestrate the frame-up?”
Julian kept his arm firmly around my waist, shielding Rose against his chest as his security detail cleared a path toward the waiting limousine.
Suddenly, a sharp, manic voice cut through the mob.
"Julian! You can't escape this!"
We stopped. Pushing through the sea of reporters came Victoria Sterling. Her hair was slightly disheveled, her designer coat unbuttoned, and her eyes wide with a desperate, unhinged madness. She was holding a tablet streaming live to millions of viewers.
"Look at him!" Victoria screamed, pointing her finger directly at Julian. "He's a fraud! His whole empire is built on lies! He helped plant fake documents to ruin my family's reputation!"
Julian turned slowly, his expression entirely devoid of emotion. He looked at Victoria the way a scientist looks at a specimen under a microscope.
"Victoria," Julian said, his voice carrying clearly across every microphone and camera lens in the area. "You planted a fake wire transfer to frame my wife for extortion. Your corporate IP address was traced to the offshore account within twenty minutes by federal cyber units."
Victoria froze, her face turning chalk white. "That's... that's a lie! You can't prove—"
"I don't need to prove anything to you," Julian interrupted coldly. He raised his hand, signaling toward the street.
A fleet of black federal SUVs pulled up behind our limousine. Four officers in dark suits stepped out, walking directly toward Victoria.
"Victoria Sterling," the lead federal agent announced loudly, holding out an arrest warrant. "You are under arrest for corporate sabotage, wire fraud, conspiracy, and the illegal fabrication of financial documents."
Gasps erupted from the crowd of reporters. Flashbulbs went off like a thunderstorm. Victoria screamed, thrashing as the federal agents placed handcuffs around her wrists and dragged her toward the squad car, her live-streaming tablet clattering uselessly against the concrete.
The media circus erupted into absolute pandemonium.
Julian didn't look back. He opened the door of the limousine, helped me inside, and climbed in beside me, pulling Rose safely into the center of the seat.
The heavy doors closed, shutting out the noise of the city, the cameras, and the flashing lights.
Inside the quiet, luxurious interior of the car, Julian exhaled a long, shuddering breath. He looked down at Rose, who was sleeping peacefully in my arms, and then up at me.
"It's over," Julian whispered, reaching out to gently touch my cheek. "We're safe. Both of you."
I looked at him—really looked at him—seeing the exhaustion, the relief, and the genuine remorse etched into his face. I didn't pull away.
"We have a lot of rebuilding to do, Julian," I said softly, resting my hand over his.
May you like
"I know," he replied, a small, genuine smile finally breaking through. "And I'll spend the rest of my life proving I'm worthy of a second chance."
The limousine merged into the evening traffic, driving us away from the ruins of our past and toward a future we would build together.
