Chapter 6 - The Media Storm

By noon, the quiet digital war had exploded into a full-scale public massacre.
My phone—a cheap prepaid device I had kept since my days working double shifts at the diner—began vibrating incessantly on the kitchen counter. Notifications flashed in rapid succession: news alerts, unknown numbers, social media tags, and frantic text messages from old acquaintances I hadn't spoken to in years.
Julian grabbed his tablet from the marble island. Within seconds, his face darkened into a thunderstorm.
"Turn on the news," he commanded, jabbing his finger at the seventy-inch smart screen mounted on the wall.
With a flick of his remote, the screen lit up. A breaking news banner flashed across CNN and Bloomberg:
BREAKING: TECH TYCOON JULIAN HARTWELL’S SECRET HEIR REVEALED AMID DRAMATIC BOARDROOM SHOWDOWN; STERLING MEDIA STOCK PLUNGES.
The screen cut to a live feed outside Whitaker Tower. Hordes of paparazzi, camera crews, and reporters were swarming the main entrance, shouting over one another. A talking head on anchor analysis was breathlessly detailing the leak.
“...Sources close to Sterling Media have confirmed that Victoria Sterling was blindsided by the sudden appearance of an infant claiming Hartwell paternity. Insiders allege that the billionaire may have maintained a secret household while publicly courting the Sterling heiress, sparking rumors of corporate fraud and high-society deception...”
"Victoria," Julian hissed, throwing the remote onto the sofa. "She leaked the story to the press. She’s trying to destroy my reputation and tank the stock before the board can ratify Grandfather's decision."
"She didn't just leak it to the press, Julian," I said, walking over to the window and looking down at the swarming mob of reporters ten floors below. "She's trying to paint me as a gold-digging mistress and Rose as a calculated trap. Look at the headlines."
Julian stepped up beside me, reading the scrolling ticker on his phone.
“Mystery Woman Storms Hartwell HQ with Baby: Extortion or True Love?” “Is Billionaire CEO Julian Hartwell Running a Double Life?”
"I'm calling a press conference," Julian declared, his jaw set in a hard, unyielding line. "Right here, in the lobby auditorium. I will clear your name, expose Victoria’s smear campaign, and introduce Rose to the world on my terms."
I turned to look at him, my eyes narrowing. "And what about your public image? What about the tech investors who care more about clean PR than human lives?"
"Let them walk," Julian said without a single second of hesitation. He reached out, his hand gently brushing against my arm—a gesture so tender it caught me entirely off guard. "I spent a year building an empire while losing everything that actually mattered. I am not losing my family twice."
Before I could answer, the penthouse door chimes echoed again—not the elevator intercom this time, but loud, aggressive pounding directly on the heavy wood.
Bang, bang, bang.
Julian strode across the penthouse and yanked the door open.
Standing in the hallway wasn't a courier or a reporter. It was Harrison Vance, flanked by two armed private security guards and a stern-looking man wearing a badge.
"Mr. Julian Hartwell," the man with the badge announced, holding up an official document. "I am Detective Miller, Financial Crimes Division. We have a court-ordered warrant to search this premises and question Mrs. Clara Hartwell regarding allegations of corporate extortion, identity fraud, and document tampering."
Julian’s face went completely blank with rage. "You are trespassing. Get off my floor before I have you arrested."

Detective Miller didn't flinch. He pointed past Julian’s shoulder, locking his eyes directly on me as I stood by the kitchen counter.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Hartwell," Detective Miller said coldly. "You're coming with us downtown."
