Chapter 2 - The Hidden Ledger

As the front door slammed behind a furious, humiliated Elena—who left screaming that Daniel would regret this day—the heavy tension in the house didn't lift; it shifted.
Rosa let out a long, shaky breath, her composure finally cracking as she wiped a tear from her cheek. "Sir, you shouldn't have done that for me," Rosa murmured, bowing her head. "Mrs. Elena will make your life impossible."
"Rosa, look at me," Daniel said, his voice softer now, laced with profound exhaustion and sudden guilt. "You’ve been here for three years. Since before my wife passed, and through all of this. Why didn't you tell me how bad it was?"
"A maid knows her place, sir," Rosa replied softly. "And a child knows who is listening. I couldn't leave Lily alone."
Daniel knelt down on the stairs, pulling Lily into his arms. The little girl buried her face in his shoulder, finally crying real tears of relief. Over her small frame, Daniel’s eyes caught sight of something sticking out from underneath the heavy wooden console table in the hallway. It was a small, black leather-bound notebook that must have fallen out of Elena's designer handbag during her hasty, angry exit.
Curiosity piqued, Daniel reached down and picked it up. He flipped it open.
It wasn't a diary. It was a ledger of control.
Page after page was filled with meticulous, chilling notes written in Elena’s sharp handwriting. There were schedules of when Lily was allowed to eat, logs of every minute Rosa spent talking to the child, and—most disturbing of all—financial calculations.
Daniel’s blood ran cold as he read a recent entry:

“The girl is an obstacle to the complete transfer of assets. Once the primary trust is signed next month, Daniel can be managed. If the maid is removed, breaking Lily's spirit will take less than six weeks. Plan for boarding school by autumn.”
Daniel stared at the words, the room tilting around him. Elena hadn't just been a cold stepmother. She had systematically engineered a cage around his daughter, and she was preparing to swallow his entire life’s work.
