Chapter 4 - The Trap is Set

The next morning, the sun broke through the tall windows of the grand living room, but the atmosphere inside was glacial.

Elena strode through the front door around 10:00 AM, looking every bit the wronged queen. She had spent the entire night scheming with her mother and her lawyer, devising a narrative of emotional abuse, marital neglect, and public humiliation that she planned to use to strip Daniel of everything he owned.

She walked into the living room, expecting to find a remorseful husband begging for her forgiveness. Instead, she found Daniel sitting calmly in his armchair, reading the financial section of the morning paper. Rosa stood behind him, holding a silver tray with coffee.

"Well," Elena announced loudly, dropping her keys onto the marble entryway table with a sharp clatter. "I hope you’ve spent the night regaining your sanity, Daniel. Because if you think I am walking back into this house without a formal apology—and the immediate firing of that woman—you are sorely mistaken."

Daniel slowly lowered the newspaper. He didn't look angry. He looked entirely detached.

"You left your journal behind, Elena," Daniel said smoothly, gesturing to the black leather book resting on the coffee table.

Elena’s face drained of color in an instant. Her eyes locked onto the book, and the predatory confidence she wore like armor instantly shattered. She lunged forward, grabbing for it, but Rosa stepped smoothly in front of the table, blocking her path with quiet, immovable dignity.

"Get out of my way, you pathetic servant!" Elena shrieked, her mask completely dissolving into raw, ugly panic. She turned her fury back on Daniel. "You had no right to read that! It’s private! It's—it's fiction! Imaginative musings!"

"Imaginative musings about embezzling my assets, isolating my daughter, and shipping her off to a boarding school?" Daniel stood up, towering over her. "And here I thought you were just a difficult wife. Turns out, you’re a professional fraud."

Elena stepped back, her chest heaving, realizing the game was up. But desperation is a dangerous thing. A chilling, twisted smile spread across her face.

"You think you’ve won, don't you?" she laughed, a high, manic sound. "You fool! Look at the date on the trust transfer forms! It was signed yesterday afternoon, while you were busy playing detective. Even if you throw me out, half of everything you own legally belongs to me now!"
