Chapter 3 - The Web Unravels

By midnight, Daniel was not sleeping. He sat in his home office, the dark screen of his laptop glowing faintly, surrounded by printed bank statements, legal documents, and Elena’s black ledger.

The betrayal ran deeper than he could have ever imagined. He discovered that over the past year, Elena had systematically alienated his long-time friends, convinced him to distance himself from his late wife’s family, and quietly moved substantial sums of money from his personal accounts into offshore shells under the guise of "household expenses" and "interior redesigns."

Rosa knocked softly on the door and entered with a cup of chamomile tea, placing it silently on the desk.

"She’s gone to her mother’s, hasn't she?" Rosa asked quietly.

"Yes," Daniel said, rubbing his temples, a headache throbbing behind his eyes. "Rosa... how much of this did you know?"

"I didn't know the financial part, sir," Rosa answered honestly, standing respectfully with her hands folded. "But I knew she hated things that she couldn't control. She hated that Lily remembered her mother. She threw away all of the old photo albums six months ago. She told Lily they were ruined in a flood."

Daniel’s fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned white. A flood. There had never been a flood.

"She’s coming back tomorrow morning," Daniel muttered, looking at the clock. "She thinks I’m weak. She thinks because I’m a man who works all day, I won't have the stomach to dismantle the life she built here."

"What are you going to do, sir?" Rosa asked, a flicker of fierce loyalty in her eyes.

"We’re going to set a trap," Daniel said, his voice cold and resolute. "And we are going to let her walk right into it."
