Chapter 3 - The Boardroom CoupThe morning sun cast a sharp, clinical light across the mahogany boardroom of Sterling Enterprises.

The emergency board meeting had been called at dawn. The twenty members of the board sat in tense, anxious silence, whispering among themselves. News of the sudden freeze on the company’s capital accounts had spread through Wall Street like wildfire. Shares of Sterling Enterprises were already plummeting in pre-market trading, down over sixty percent.

The heavy double doors swung open.

All heads snapped toward the entrance. Expecting to see Damian—disheveled, panicked, and desperate—they braced themselves.

Instead, the doors pushed wide to reveal Marcus Vance, holding them open. And walking through them, with measured, unhurried steps, was Elena.

She wore a tailored charcoal-gray pantsuit, her hair pulled back into a sleek, flawless knot. Her expression was carved from marble.

An audible gasp rippled through the room.

"What is the meaning of this?" barked old Mr. Henderson, the senior board member and Damian’s primary ally. He slammed his hand onto the polished table. "Who let her in here? Security! Guard! This woman is an unemployed dependent of the former CEO! She has no business being on this floor, let alone in the executive boardroom!"

Elena didn't blink. She walked straight to the head of the table—the massive, high-backed leather chair reserved exclusively for the controlling chairman—and pulled it out.

She sat down, crossed her legs, and rested her hands on the armrests.

"Mr. Henderson," Elena said, her voice cutting through the murmurs like a scalpel. "Your pension fund is currently invested through a shell company managed by the Phoenix Trust. If I snap my fingers right now, your retirement portfolio vanishes before the opening bell rings."

Henderson turned white as a sheet. He opened his mouth to retort, but no sound came out.

"Sit down," Elena commanded.

Henderson slowly sank back into his chair, his hands trembling.

"Now," Elena continued, scanning the terrified faces around the table. "Let us review the corporate ledger. For the past twenty-four months, Damian Sterling has embezzled approximately twelve million dollars in corporate funds to finance his personal lifestyle and maintain his mistress's exorbitant lifestyle."

"Proof!" someone shouted nervously from the middle of the table. "You can't just make accusations without documentary evidence!"

Marcus stepped forward and dropped a thick stack of audited forensic accounting reports onto the center of the table, sliding copies to every board member.

"Pages forty through eighty-two detail the offshore wire transfers," Marcus announced coldly. "Every single transaction bears Damian Sterling’s digital signature, routed through accounts linked directly to Veronica Vance."

The board members frantically flipped through the pages. The silence in the room grew suffocating. The numbers were undeniable. The embezzlement was massive, systematic, and completely traceable.

"Under Article 14 of the corporate charter," Elena said, leaning forward slightly, her eyes locking onto every single person in the room, "any executive officer found guilty of corporate fraud and embezzlement has their shares immediately forfeited to the primary holding entity."

She paused, letting the weight of her words sink in.

"As of eight o'clock this morning, the Phoenix Trust holds ninety-eight point four percent of Sterling Enterprises. Which makes me your sole controlling shareholder, your chairman, and your boss."

A young junior board member raised his hand timidly. "Wh-What happens to Damian?"

Elena smiled—a cold, beautiful, terrifying smile.

"Damian is currently facing criminal indictment for wire fraud, embezzlement, and corporate espionage. The district attorney's office received our file thirty minutes ago. He will spend the next fifteen years reflecting on what it means to be an expense."
