Chapter 5 - The Shadows of the PastInside the executive suite on the fiftieth floor, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the chaos on the streets.

Elena stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking out over the sprawling skyline of the city. The sun was fully up now, casting golden rays across the skyscrapers. Every building she looked at, every commercial block, every logistics hub—so much of it was tied back to her vision, her strategy, her empire.

Marcus walked in quietly, placing a leather-bound file on the sleek mahogany desk.

"Boss, the background check on Damian’s family assets is complete," Marcus reported, his tone professional and steady. "As you suspected, his father—Arthur Sterling—was the one who orchestrated the hostile buyout of your family’s firm ten years ago."

Elena’s reflection in the glass didn't flinch, but her eyes darkened into bottomless pools of ice.

Ten years ago.

She remembered it like it was yesterday. The sudden, brutal corporate raid that destroyed her father’s shipping company, driving him to a fatal heart attack out of sheer stress and betrayal. She remembered standing at his grave as an eighteen-year-old orphan, swearing that she would rise from the ashes and take back everything that had been stolen from her family.

She had spent three years infiltrating the Sterling household, adopting the persona of a quiet, unassuming dependent, studying Damian’s weaknesses, mapping his vulnerabilities, and quietly buying up his father’s debts through a maze of anonymous offshore trusts.

Damian had thought he was slumming with a charity case. In reality, he had invited his executioner into his bed.

"Where is Arthur Sterling now?" Elena asked quietly.

"Retired in Florida," Marcus replied. "Living in a gated estate in Palm Beach, completely unaware that his son just destroyed the entire family legacy."

Elena turned away from the window. A slow, dangerous smile curved her lips.

"Book a private jet for Palm Beach this afternoon," Elena said. "It's time for a family reunion."

Marcus bowed slightly. "Already on it, Boss. The flight is scheduled for 3:00 PM."

Before Marcus could reach the door, his phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, his eyebrows furrowing slightly. He pressed the receiver to his ear, listened for a few seconds, and then looked back at Elena.

"Boss, you have a visitor downstairs in the lobby. Refusing to leave."

Elena raised an eyebrow. "Who?"

"Arthur Sterling. He flew in on an emergency private flight from Florida as soon as he heard the stock market crash. He’s demanding an immediate audience with the new majority shareholder of the Phoenix Trust."

Elena let out a soft, humorless chuckle.

"Well," she said, adjusting the cuffs of her jacket. "Save us the fuel cost. Send him up."
