Chapter 4 - The Fall of the SocialiteWhile Elena restructured an entire corporate empire downtown, Veronica was discovering a very different kind of reality on the streets.

The designer bags, the luxury apartment keys, the unlimited credit cards—all of it had evaporated before sunrise. When the security guards had thrown Damian and Veronica out of the penthouse, they hadn't even allowed them to pack a suitcase.

Veronica stood on the curb of Fifth Avenue in a silk evening dress and towering stilettos, shivering in the crisp morning air, clutching a single clutch bag that contained only her expired gym membership card and a shattered compact mirror.

"This is all your fault!" Veronica shrieked, turning on Damian, who was pacing furiously on the sidewalk, hammering away at his locked cell phone.

"My fault?" Damian roared back, veins bulging on his forehead. "If you hadn't insisted on humiliating her in her own home—if you hadn't demanded that gold ring right then and there—we wouldn't be standing on the street like homeless dogs!"

"My own home?" Veronica laughed hysterically, tears of rage blurring her mascara. "You told me she was a charity case! You told me she was a pathetic orphan you kept around out of pity! You lied to me because you’re a weak, pathetic loser!"

A black town car slowed down near the curb. Veronica’s face lit up with desperate hope. She stepped forward, waving her hand frantically. "Chad! Chad, darling! Over here!"

The rear window rolled down. Chad, one of Damian’s former high-society drinking buddies, looked out with a look of profound disgust and pity.

"Chad, listen to me," Veronica pleaded, leaning down toward the window, putting on her most seductive smile despite the tear tracks on her cheeks. "Damian and I had a little emergency with our accounts this morning. Can you lend us your driver for a few hours? Just drop us at the plaza hotel, and—"

"Get lost, Veronica," Chad interrupted coldly.

Veronica froze. "What did you just say?"

"I said, get lost," Chad repeated, his voice devoid of any warmth. "Word travels fast on Wall Street, sweetheart. Everyone already knows Damian is broke, blacklisted, and facing federal indictment. My father's firm just cut all ties with Sterling Enterprises. You’re radioactive. Don't ever call my phone again."

The window rolled up with a sharp electronic whir. The town car accelerated smoothly into traffic, splashing a puddle of dirty street water across the hem of Veronica’s expensive designer dress.

Veronica stood there, stunned, the bitter reality crashing down upon her. She wasn't a high-society queen anymore. She was just a discarded toy, stripped of her armor, exposed to the cruel elements of a world she had exploited for years.

She turned slowly toward Damian, her eyes burning with pure venom.

"I hate you," Veronica whispered. "I hope you rot in prison."

May you like

"Go to hell," Damian spat back, turning his back on her and walking down the avenue alone, muttering incoherently to himself like a madman.

Veronica sank down onto a cold concrete bench, burying her face in her hands, as the indifferent city rushed past her without a single glance.
