Chapter 1 - THE TASTE OF THE ABYSSThe silence in the private alcove grew heavy, thick with the scent of dark chocolate and impending doom. Celeste’s hand drifted to her throat, her fingers clawing slightly at the expensive fabric of her collar as a wave of dizziness slammed into her. The pristine, sophisticated mask she had worn for two years began to fracture, revealing the frantic panic underneath.

"Alexander," she whispered, her voice tightening, losing its melodic cadence. "I... I don't feel well. The room is spinning."

"Perhaps you should take a deep breath," Alexander replied, his voice an anchor of chilling composure. He sat back in his velvet chair, his dark eyes locked onto her face, watching every micro-expression, every drop of cold sweat beading on her forehead. The man who had outmaneuvered corporate giants on Wall Street was now dissecting a betrayal more intimate and lethal than any hostile takeover.

Across the room, the private elevator chimed. The glass doors slid open, and two men stepped out into the restaurant. Even from fifty feet away, Alexander recognized them instantly. One was Marcus Vance, his own senior legal counsel and head of corporate compliance. The other was David Thorne, a ruthless venture capitalist who had spent the last five years trying to strip-mine Sterling Enterprises.

They weren't supposed to be here. They were supposed to be across the Atlantic, managing an acquisition in London.

Celeste saw them too. Her eyes widened in horror, darting between the arriving men and Alexander. She tried to stand, but her legs betrayed her, buckling beneath her as she slumped back into her chair, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps.

"Marcus," Alexander said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the suddenly hushed restaurant. Renaud the chef, hovering near the kitchen entrance, froze in place. "David. How wonderful of you to drop by. I didn't realize my legal team moonlighted as social escorts."

Marcus Vance blanched, his briefcase nearly slipping from his grip. David Thorne, however, recovered quickly, smoothing his lapels with a cold, predatory smirk as they walked toward the alcove.

"Alexander," David purred, stopping at the edge of the table. "We heard you were celebrating. We just wanted to ensure the... transition of your estate was handled smoothly."

Alexander didn't stand. He picked up his crystal water glass, swirled the ice, and let out a low, humorless chuckle.

"Transition?" Alexander tilted his head, his gaze shifting to Celeste, who was now clutching her stomach, whimpering in pain as the neurotoxin—or whatever poison she had paid to have slipped into the soufflé—began to paralyze her nervous system. "How fascinating. Because my signature isn't on a single document transferring my assets. Unless, of course, someone planned on forging it after a tragic, untimely heart attack over dessert."

Marcus staggered backward, his face draining of all color. "Alexander, we can explain—"

"You can," Alexander interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, turning the air in the room to ice. "In federal custody. But first, we need to talk about a little girl in a blue hoodie."
