Chapter 6 - SHADOWS IN THE PENTHOUSEThe penthouse apartment overlooking Central Park was vast, quiet, and blindingly luxurious. But tonight, the lights were dimmed.

Alexander sat in his leather study, swirling a glass of single-malt scotch, staring out at the city lights. The storm had passed, leaving the Manhattan skyline washed clean and glittering like diamonds against black velvet.

A soft knock sounded at the open door.

Maya stood there, holding a mug of hot chocolate topped with miniature marshmallows. She looked smaller here, swallowed by the sheer scale of the penthouse, but her eyes were sharp, scanning the room like a tactical commander.

"Can't sleep?" Alexander asked, setting his glass down.

Maya walked in and set the mug on the edge of his mahogany desk, pulling up a chair. "Too much caffeine. And too many thoughts."

"About what?"

"About how fast everything can change," Maya said quietly, her gaze dropping to her hands. "One minute you're sleeping under a tarp behind a dumpster, and the next you're sitting in a boardroom telling old guys in suits how to spend millions of dollars."

Alexander stood up, walked around the desk, and leaned against it, looking down at her. "Life is a series of calculated risks, Maya. Most people spend their lives ignoring the warning signs because they're afraid of what they'll find if they look too closely. You didn't look away. You ran into the fire."

"Because someone had to," she muttered.

"Indeed," Alexander agreed. "Just remember: power attracts parasites. Now that you're sitting at the table, people will try to smile at you while hiding knives behind their backs. Just like Celeste."

Maya looked up, her blue eyes locking onto his. "I'm not Celeste. I don't trust smiles. I trust data."

Alexander chuckled, a rich, genuine sound. "Good girl. Never lose that."

As Maya turned to head back to her suite down the hall, her phone—a brand-new secure device provided by Sterling IT—buzzed loudly on the desk.

Alexander glanced at the screen. It was an automated notification from the federal prison intake system.
